There are three components that control the automatic defrost cycle.

#1 is the defrost timer, this is a simple clock and set of contacts that switch from cooling mode to defrost mode every 8 to 10 hours. The timer knob can be turned clockwise slowly until a positive 'click' is felt, this is the defrost mode. Let it sit there for about 10 minutes and you should hear the hiss or sizzle, if not then we go a bit deeper.

#2 defrost heater, this heater is located on the bottom of the cooling coils behind the back panel in the freezer, it will run long enough to remove the frost from the evaporator coils and turn off by the defrost terminator or no longer than 25 minutes maximum

#3 defrost terminator or thermostat or bi metal, 3 names same part. This is clipped on to the evaporator coils near the top and senses the temperature, it is there so the defrost cycle does not run too long.

Why is my top shelf freezing up so easily

When opening the freezer door on a hot humid day, you allow this hot humid air inside that freezes on very cold surfaces. Cool your home with AC, it will get rid of the excessive humidity to reduce your freezer problem. The less time the freezer door is opened also helps to reduce the ice buildup.

How can I stop condesation building up on back wall of freezer side ? Water is running onto floor and pooling up.

Good Morning Friend,

I understand you have condensation building up on the back wall of the freezer side of your Frigidaire refrigerator, model# FGHC2342LF. I also see that this is a new refrigerator for you, and the water is pooling on the floor. It would take 24 hours for your refrigerator to stabilize at the set temperatures. First, I suggest giving it this timeframe. Secondly, if it is hot and humid, this is normal and can occur. Lastly, check with your installer to make sure that your refrigerator was installed correctly. I ask that you please follow up with a comment on the post, at your convenience, to advise if further troubleshooting is needed or if your appliances status has changed successfully. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-

Power outage and fridge doesnt come back on when power is restored

First make sure there is power to the plug at the wall. If not check the breaker. If power at the plug, the power outage could have been associated with a power surge that killed your refrig.

Hotpoint freezer FZA84 does not freeze ,high temperature light is on. when switched on the temperature comes down to about -12 C . does not come any lower but i hear a irregular hissing sound probably

You need to cut it off. You may be doing a lot of damage there. If this freezer is 8-10 years old, you may want to go ahead and replace it. At least it will not give you any more problems.

i could be wrong, but, look along the bottom of the door to see if the seal is tight to the frame......if there is an air gap it is causing the floor to freeze the cold air....

When I shut my freezer door, the freezer makes a hissing sound for roughtly 15 seconds, during which, the freezer door wont open. At the moment there is no food in it, could that be the problem?

the auto defrost fan is drawing the air out to cut down on frost buildup....when you do put food in freezer use vacuum sealer to stop freezer burn and keep portions seperate, easier to rotate food for consumption.also frozen meat can be kept for upto a year at minus 18/20c

There is frost in the freezer. I thought it was frostless.

If you live in a humid environment its the water vapor in the air that is turning to frost in your freezer. Every time you open the door you are exchanging the cold dry air in your freezer for the humid air on the outside, and when you shut the door closed its this humid air that turns to frost inside the freezer. If its building up frost faster than normal you might have a door gasket that is leaking the cold air outside thus letting the humid air in, which is turning to frost. Check that your door is aligned properly and that the gasket is secure on the freezer door.

Hope this helps explain it.

Maytag model MQU1556AEW, frost-free freezer forms ice in bottom.

I'm not sure if this will help but the freezer that is located on the bottom of my refrigerator started forming ice on the back part where the cold air was supposed to be coming out. I kept hearing a hissing sound like water dripping on a hot surface. I called the repair man in and he had to replace the defrost timer. Once he did that it worked like a charm.

I am not an expert by any means although removing ice from a frost-free freezer is a pain and this took care of the problem for me. Good luck!

Fisher and paykel vertical freezer N308 model

bec,

Sounds like you are freezing up! The coils are so frost-laden that they will not allow the unit to function. The unit will need a complete defrost. I'm not familiar with the exact layout of this unit but I can tell you that it needs to be shut down, have warm air blown into the fan area and completely freed of ice. If you just leave it open and turned off, this takes about 2 days.

Possible causes: humidity in the air is condensing...very humid area, too much 'window shopping', not closing the door completely, possible damaged door gasket.

Others: (on older units)

Possible defrost timer problem...or low gas. Try the defrost route. We'll go from there.
