A caller hears my announcement but the machine cuts off before a messages can be recorded

There a chance your machine recorded too many messages, which actually means, the memory is full and should be cleaned / wiped.
Check the manual or download it here and see for page 5 at subtitle deleting messages.

How do i record my personal greeting on answer machine model ATT 1717. I am only able to get the prerecorded greeting. Thank you charlene

I hope this helps you:

Recording Your Announcement

Before using this answering system, you

should record the announcement (up to

one minute long) that callers will hear

when the system answers a call. If you

choose not to record an announcement,

the system answers with a prerecorded

announcement: "Hello. Please leave a

message after the tone."

1 Press and hold annc/skip. The system

beeps. Speak toward the microphone

normally, from about nine inches away.

While you are recording, the Message

Window displays -.

2 To stop recording, release .annc/skip

The system automatically plays back

your announcement.

To review your announcement, press
and release .annc/skip

You can get a copy of your 1717 manual at this web site:

Hope this helps. Good Luck, Barb

I am trying to turn my ringer on. I was trying to change the number of rings from 4 to 3 and got all messed up Robert

The AT&T 1717 can be set to 2, 4 or tollsaver rings. Tollsaver means it will answer in 4 rings if their are no new messages and will answer in 2 rings when their is a new message. This is a convenience when checking for new messages when away from home or office. Cannot be set to answer in 3 rings. Press and hold the SETUP button until you hear the ring option announced, press ANNC/SKIP button or MEMO/REPEAT button until the ring option you want is announced. Press PLAY/STOP button to exit.

I am away and want to retrieve my messages on my home phone

Call your Number let the machine answer and press the star button on the phone you are calling from. That should then let you press in your pin and access your messages on the machine.

Is a way to recover deleted answering machine messages?

The link to the manual:

http://telephones.att.com/docMgt/public/art/162/1717_manual.pdf

Have reviewed and it depends on if it was a saved message or if it was just in the in box with all being deleted.

Read the manual carefully.

Erasing recorded calls from remote location.

It takes a lot of patience; however pursue an AT&T telephone number that is manned by a live person; then follow a trail of phone numbers until one of them connects with a helpfull live person who is familiar with the problem and who then furnishes a very simple solution.
