Grinding noise still works but makes a grinding noise every second or two when copying. paper bunches up as it starts across heating roller and was making a gear skipping sound

A screw or something else is in the printer not allowing the gear to move freely.

Pl. do test as per following.
1- empty paper tray.
2- pull the toner cart. and close the door.
3- power ON the printer. Listen the sound of initial motor run,
(If smooth not grinding noise, check the toner cart OPC drum for jam. If yes check the fusser drive gear and fusser gear and assembly)
If all are ok.
4- Check the paper pick up roller shaft, (sometimes it takes a bunch of paper and jammed if you forcible pull the bunch in reverse direction the shaft may gets bend cause the grinding noise during paper pickup. in that case you have to replace the paper pickup shaft.

It sounds as though a sheet of paper or an envelope bunched up and has jammed inside. Until that is removed from the feed roller, you will continue to hear the 'grinding' sound, and won't be able to print anything. Remove the cover from the backside of the machine, then locate and remove the obstruction. If you don't have any such obstruction then you have a mechanical defect which is not user repairable.

There are two drives in the printer. One moves the print head (cartridge) back and forth across the paper. Check to see if the "rubber band" drive belt is slipping or broken off. There is also a roller motor which feeds the paper. This has nylon gears which can make a grinding sound if one of the gears gets stuck. Make sure there are no pieces of paper stuck in the gears.

Probably a broken Hot Roller gear in the fuser. The fuser is the section in the back, that presses the print between a pair of hot rollers to melt the powdered toner into the paper, making the image permanent. That combination of heat and pressure makes the fuser vulnerable to breakage in any laser printer or copier. The HR (hot roller) gear is a ring around one end of the heated roller, and it sometimes breaks apart.
The MFC 9880 isn't listed on Brother's US service website, so I can't tell you whether you need to buy a whole fuser assembly or just that gear.

The grinding noise is the clashing of gears. The fuser is composed of 2 rollers, a metal or ceramic with a heater inside (bulb) and a silicon roller to apply pressure. The 'hot' roller is geared and the silicon roller can be geared or free floating. There is at least 1 paper sensor in the the fuser to let the unit know whether paper is there and there when it should or should not be. Sometimes, the sensor gets slightly dislodged and can actually cause a jam. If you are hearing a gear clash, the paper is being pushed through the machine and instead of being pushed through the fuser, it stops because the fuser rollers are not turning. The rest of the machine keeps pushing, crinkling the paper.
If there is crinkling, then gears that drive the fuser need to be checked. It is this gear cluster and/or the fuser that need to be replaced.

Probably worn gears for the rollers along the paper path or the gears that mesh with the imaging roller in the toner cartridge. Remove the toner cartridge and reseat it. Also look for any rounding of the gear teeth on any of the rollers while you have to cartridge out.

Loud clacking sound, jamming in fuser ? sounds like the gear that turns the fuser are bad and not meshing together,
accordion jam is the fingers or claws that ride on the fuser roller are probably worn out ( these can be replaced usually 3-5 ).

You can buy the parts and replace them yourself if a handy person, not that difficult.

Is the noise comming from the right side of the copier? If so you need the upper fusing roller drive gear. It will break sooner then later.

Check that the paper pickup rollers forthat tray are not melted from excessive heat. Take out the paper tray and try to manually move the gears.
