My Compaq internal CD-ROM drive stopped reading disks after I tried to delete the Sonic Record Now! software. I didn't realize this software was important to keep on the hard drive. So far, my research indicates I need to do something with the Upper and Lower Filters folders in the registry, but I am unsure about what specifically needs to happen.

Can't get rid of the Sonic Activation Message that appears on Dell computers "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'Sonic Activation...

Sonic is typically a cd burner software. look for any CD utilities running down by the clock and right click on the icon to exit them. Maybe look for a sonic or CD/DVD software package that would have come on a disk with your computer , insert it and re-install the package, that may do it for you. If the nag is tooo annoying, for the interim look in your start menu under startup and delete anything in there that is in relation to sonic or cd writing software. Hope that helps you. Cheers

My cd rom/dvd drive will not read any disc

Hi,
Check the cd-rom power is on or not. Then also if its not reading then Insert an DVD/CD cleaner disk and follow the steps. The cleaner disk is available in any of the computer shops. There may be some lens problem. After trying above steps if again same problem occurs then you need to replace the cd/dvd rom drive. Thank you.........

Only reads some disks.

Hi, if the PC's are older than 3 years or the cdrom drives are near it's end of life, it will make problems to read some CDR's. If you recorded the CD's you are trying to read, try recording at less than 4X speed.
Sometimes, even "original" or "silver" CD's will make problems because they are not recorded correctly at the factory.
If the problem is with a CDRW drive, it applies the same theory, the recording laser is damaged or used up. It will not record a legible CD or DVD even if the software says that the record operation ended successfully.
