You may have a clog, which over heated the motor and it shut down. Clog could be in the hose, the dirt inlet by the brush roll and bag/filters. Some have a reset on the back, near the bottom. If not, then the over loard protector may have gone bad, could also have a motor problem.

The color flashing tells you how close you are to a full charge. The orange/red flashing should change to yellow and finally green. Sorry I have an original model so your's might be slightly different. Does it never change from orange/red?

Hi Melisa
Because it has a dirty fan system where dirt is picked up and put through the fan impeller before it goes up the back spine and into the bag, it sounds like stones or hard dust has entered the fan and bounced off into the motor. Sadly this is one of the most common factors like Orecks that have a dirty fan system. It would have to be repaired unless you know how to take it apart and clear it. The green light certainly sounds like something you picked up with the Oreck and it has affected the motor.
The whine tells you taht the bearings are bad. Now they may be putting a drag on the armature and causing it to shut down after getting hot. You will have to replace the motor.
Some of the Dirt Devils have a reset button on the back, near the bottom. But if the it is getting hot on the bottom, that may mean the motor is trying to run but can't. Maybe something has jammed it. You would have to disasemble it to find out.
