You have to remove the whole engine air shroud over the flywheel to gain access to the recoil and rope mechanism. If you need specific help on your exact model engine I need all of engine model type numbers 5 to 6 char then 4 char then 2 char i.e XXXXXX-YYYY-ZZ for B & S Honda numbers are by the engine oil port on the base of the crank case. How do I replace the starter (pull) rope on a toro ccr2450 (model 38413)?

Although it looks like you simply un-bolt the recoil starter you need remove the whole blower (flywheel) housing as there are nuts on the back side.
  • Once the housing is off, remove the broken rope and prepare a length of rope to replace it base upon the old ropes length. Probably close to 6 feet.Don't forget to put the pull handle on the new rope.
  • Tighten the recoil pulley in the direction it normally turns as you pull the rope out until it stops.
  • Slowly back of up to one turn to align the hole in the pulley with the housing hole and hold it in that position while you insert the rope and try a sturdy knot.
  • Slowly let recoil assembly pull the rope back in and test that it is working properly before re-installing the housing.
  • Once you are satisfied that the recoil is working properly re-install the remaining covers.

Pull cord stuck open

Most likely the recoil spring broke. The engine cover has to be removed to repair this. If you are not mechanically inclined, it would be best to take it to a local small engine repair shop. Proper replacement involves knowing how many pre-wind rotations is required to properly recoil the rope. Some things are just better left to the pros.

Pull rope will not pull

Remove recoil rope assembly. Ensure rope is properly wrapped around. While recoil assembly is removed use ratchet and socket to rotate fly wheel, remove spark plug first, observe compression and exhaust at spark plug whole during rotation of fly wheel. Clean or replace spark plug. Ensure oil is full. 30w. Set spark plug gap. Always use Stabile in gas. Replace coil rope is required. Purchased by the foot at any mower repair store.

I have a 22in recycler lawn mover. the recoil

There is a safety brake on the handle that MUST be held down to start the engine. You must squeeze the safety agaist the handle to operate the mower. If not you will not be able to start the mower.

If your holding the safety mechanism and it is still locked then either the cable has become detached or... borken. Check to make sure the cable is connected to the safety mechanism. If it is and it still does not release then you should in all honesty contact Toro for the nearest warranty repair center.

Doesn,t engage with engine

sounds like the dogs and or springs are worn. When you had the cover off the machine did you check that the dogs would freely move out when the rope was pulled? They some times stick and will not engage.

How to change the pull string on a toro 22 inch recycler

To take the housing off, you may need to remove the carb choke houseing "becasue of a hard to reach bolt. A small oil filler tube screw and then a couple screws on the top. I dont know if you broke the rope or of the assemble inside is broke, but they make a kit for new springs and wings that is fairly simple to replace if thats the latter of the two.

I would discourage the average handy person from undoing the screw on the plastic reel inside under the cover and pulling up, as it is the metal band that creates the recoil tension and those are challenging still 15 years later. ;)
