I want to install printer drivers to a laptop but the printer is in the field, how can I install the drivers without having the printer connected tot he laptop.

You don't necessarily need your printer connected to your PC to install the driver. The driver installation is so that your PC can communicate with the specified printer. If you have the install CD you can install the driver and software. Now Depending on your printing machine, some installation CD's will ask you to please connect your Printer. If this is the case, there really is no way around that because the installation directions wont let you proceed to the next step without doing that.
Each printer and its installation software have different protocols. Some will let you install without the printer being connected, some wont.
I hope this information gives you some clarification on your question.
Regards,
Nico

How can i install my printer without a cd

Hi

please follow steps to setup your printer

Install a printer driver locally Installing a printer driver is a Windows function, not a PowerPoint one. Before installing a printer driver, quit PowerPoint and your other programs.

Read over the installation instructions that came with your printer. When in doubt, follow the instructions there rather than the ones below.

  • Click Start, Settings, Control Panel.
  • Double-click "Printers & Faxes"
  • Double-click "Add Printer" to start the Add Printer Wizard

addprinter_1.gif
The Add Printer Wizard Welcome screen
  • Click Next

addprinter_2.gif
Local or Network Printer
  • Click "Local Printer"
  • Make sure there's NO checkmark next to "Automatically detect and install ..."
  • Click Next

Select a Printer Port
  • If your printer is actually attached to the computer, click "Use the following port" and select the port your printer's attached to.
  • If you're installing a driver only to keep PowerPoint happy, choose LPT1: or FILE: (it doesn't really matter, since you'll never actually print to the port)
  • If you're installing a local driver but need to print to a network printer, look for the printer's port on the network and choose it, if available. If not, choose LPT1: for now. You can change the setting later.
  • Click Next (please select canon from list)

Install Printer Software
  • If installing a real printer, select your printer manufacturer and printer model here.
  • If you have an installation disk or CD that came with the printer, click "Have Disk" and locate the INF file for the printer (check the printer's documentation for specific instructions).
  • If installing a printer only to keep PowerPoint happy, choose the HP LaserJet 4V/4MV as we've done here
  • Click Next

addprinter_5.gif
Name Your Printer
  • Give the printer a name (this is the name you'll use to select it later)
  • If installing a printer just to make PowerPoint happy, you might want to give it a name that indicates it isn't a real physical printer (PPT Pacifier, or the like)
  • Click "Yes" under "Do you want to use this printer as the default printer" (this option may not appear in all Windows versions; see Notes below)
  • Click Next

addprinter_6.gif
Printer Sharing
  • Click "Do not share this printer"
  • Click Next

Print Test Page
  • Click No
  • Click Next

  • Review your choices. Click Back if you need to change anything
  • Click Finish

Problem with instalation

Whenever you install a printer you should install the installation software that came with the printer before you connect the printer. Usually the installation software will tell you when to connect the printer and then it will configure it and print a test page. I would go to add/remove programs and remove any remove any software you have installed for the printer. Then remove the printer from the control panel at the printer icon. Then disconnect the printer and re-start the computer. Now use the installation cd and follow it's instructions.

Cant instal the printer to mi computer

Setting up or installing a printer in Microsoft Windows. Issue:Setting up or installing a printer in Microsoft Windows.
Solution:There are two different methods a user can install a printer in Microsoft Windows. Below is additional information about each of these methods listed in the order we believe a user should try installing their printer in Microsoft Windows.
Before being able to install your printer you must have the software that was included with the printer. If you've lost the software for your printer you can download the drivers for your printer and use the drivers to install your printer. A listing of printer manufacturers and links to their associated drivers pages can be found on our printer drivers page.
Setup a printer using printer software
Every printer should come with the software used to install a printer in Windows. Although not all installations are the same the steps for installing this software should be similar to the below steps.
  1. Connect the printer to the computer and a power outlet and make sure it's on.
  2. Insert the CD that was included with the printer. If the CD does not automatically start the install program open My Computer, double-click on the CD drive, and then the Setup or Install file.
  3. Follow the installation wizard and your printer and its associated software should be installed successfully.
Installing a printer only using the drivers
In addition to the above steps a users can install a printer in Windows only using the printer drivers. This is recommended if you only want the printer to be installed but not the additional printer software programs that are often included with the installation and/or you've download drivers.
A listing of printer drivers and software downloads can be found through our printer drivers page.
Note: if you've installed the printer doing the above steps these steps should not be necessary unless you encountered errors.
  1. Connect the printer to the computer and a power outlet and make sure it's on.
  2. Click Start, Settings, and Control Panel.
  3. In the control panel double-click the Printers or Printers and Fax icon.
  4. In the Printers window click the Add a printer icon.
  5. After completing the above steps the Windows Printer Wizard will appear. Click Next, to start the wizard.
  6. Windows will prompt you if you're installing a Local or Network printer. If the printer is connected to your computer choose Local printer attached to this computer and click Next.
  7. When prompted for the location of the drivers for the printer. Browse the computer to the directory of your drivers or point it to the CD that was included with your printer.
Testing the printer
After the printer has been installed in Windows you can use Windows to print a self-test page to make sure the printer is working by following the below steps.
Microsoft Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP, 2003, and Vista users
  1. Click Start, Settings, and open Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Printers or Printers and Fax icon.
  3. Right-click on the Printer you wish to test and click Properties. If you do not see your printer listed your printer is not installed. Seedocument CH000939 for additional information about installing a printer in Windows.
  4. In the Printers Properties window click the Print Test Page button.
  5. If the printer is able to print a test page, you're printer is installed and setup properly. However, if you're unable to print in other programs it's possible that the program you're attempting to print from has issues.
