Dear Sir/Madam, I accidentally connected the wrong mains charger my Tom Tom 510. (but only 6V dc as opposed to the correct 5V dc charger) This resulted in a smell of electrical burning and a bright white screen which I was unable to switch off. After several hours the battery was drained and the screen returned to the normal off state. It it worth mending? Thank you for your help. Paul
Most likey its not worth fixing. Look at it like this. While it may have only been 6 volts versus 5. One volt in a 5 volt system is a 20 percent increase.
If you took something that ran on 120 volts and plugged it into a 144 volt source you can figure the damage that would do.

The Car chargers are generally the defective unit.
I have also faced a similar issue as the spring loaded cigarette lighter was pushing the charger causing it to disconnect.
try downloading tom tom home to your computer and use your dock or cable to connect it to your computer, switch on your tomtom and allow it to connect to your computer and updates should automatically happen, this should fix it, good luck
Hi. I just bought an in-car charger for the 7211 on ebay. It is 5v with a 2amp flow. It's not for the mini-USB port on the side but for the dc input hole on the other side. I've just plugged it into my laptop via the mini-USB port to see if it will charge that way but it doesn't seem to be doing. Hope this helps.
leave on charge for two hours, then with the SD card out hold down the reset button at the back of unit for ten seconds and then the 'on' switch for ten seconds. STEP 1

via USB and open up your Windows Explorer and go to the drive. (It will be listed as TOMTOM (E) or some other drive letter).
Copy the Yellow Folders one by one to your PC. Ideally, save all the folders under a new folder that you name.
You may find that the folder ttntools and gns may not be copied. This is o.k. if they aren't.
STEP 2
Format your Tomtom via MY Computer.
STEP 3
Copy the Yellow Folders from the backup

STEP 4
Open TomTom Home
Click on Upate Now.
Install the latest update onto your TomTom.
Once installed, switch your TomTom off, then disconnect if from the PC.
Thats it. From now on, make a full backup using TomTom Home prior to any updates.
Also note, that copying all the files will take some time.
Is there a reset button? See this from PocketGPSworld.com:
Reset hole
The Reset hole is hard to find, you need to first remove it from the mount, turn it upside down, and within the mounting base area of GO you will see two interface slots (currently only one is being used) and towards the front of the unit on the base you will see a little hole marked reset. This is just like soft resetting a Palm or Pocket PC, it requires something small like a paperclip, and nothing was supplied with GO to enable you to easily reset the device.
