Doesn't play blu-ray discs all the way through but will play dvds. What is going wrong? Usually will only play one chapter of a blu-ray and then it will start scanning forward or pausing.

You should try this: go to www.sonystyle.com then click on "support" then click on "software/drivers" then enter your model number in the box and follow the rest of the instructions to download and install/update the firmware in your BluRay player, this may fix the problem and it may not but give it a try, if this doesn't fix it contact Sony's tech line and they will help you.
Good Luck !

Standard DVDSs are read by a red laser while blue ray DVDs are read by a blue laser (hence the name). The blue laser diode is likely to be faulty and therefore standard dvds work but blue ray dvds do not. This is not an easily obtainable or replaceable part.

No. Blu Ray media requires a different device technology provided only by Blu Ray players. It will not play on a DVD player.
