How do I get rid of viruses?

Firstly you must have virus protection on your computer. There are plenty of free anti virus software on the internet. Avira, AVG No need to accept the extras that come with the download. Or Windows Security Essentials seem to do a good job. Run the program and find out what type of virus it is. Do some searches on the internet and find out the best way to get rid of it. Sometimes the best way is the easiest way. Maybe , just your anti virus software is enough. Free Malwarebytes is also a must to install on a windows OS. Personally I will not surf the internet if I do have anti virus software and Malwarebytes.

Everytime i try to install norton internet security 2011 on my computer running windows xp it says the program that you try to install has detected as malware and it cancelled the installation..

Seems like you have virus or malware on your computer. Download malwarebytes from www.malwarebytes.org and run a scan. Remove anything that malwarebytes suggest. You should also run a scan in safemode. After you have done this you should try to install Norton Internet Security 2011 again.

I am trying to get rid of the xp home security 2011 virus.

Manual Removal:
1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del on keyboard to stop process associated to "XP Home Security 2011?. When Windows Task Manager opens, go to Processes Tab and find and end the following process:
(random characters).exe
2. You need to update your installed antivirus application to have the latest database.
3. Thoroughly scan the computer and any detected threats must be removed. If removal is prohibited, it is best to quarantine the infected item. Manually locating and deleting of malicious files should also be performed. Please see files below that are related to XP Home Security 2011 Virus.
4. Registry entries created by XP Home Security 2011 must also be remove from the Windows system. Please refer below for entries associated to the rogue program. [how to edit registry]
5. Exit registry editor.
6. Get rid of XP Home Security 2011 start-up entry by going to Start > Run, type msconfig on the "Open" dialog box. A windows containing System Configuration Utility will be launched. Go to Startup tab and uncheck the following Start-up item(s):
(random characters).exe
7. Click Apply and restart the computer.
XP Home Security 2011 Removal Tool:
In order to completely remove the threat from a computer, it is best to download and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Sometimes, Trojans will block the downloading and installation of MBAM. If this happens, download it from a clean computer and rename the executable file before executing on the infected computer.
Using Portable SuperAntiSpyware:
To thoroughly clean a computer, it is best to do a separate scan of another security program so that other infected files not detected by anti-virus application can be remove as well. Download and run SuperAntiSpyware Portable Scanner.

I have webroot antivirus and spysweeper on this home computer, but my husbands laptop has no security on his at all. Now he has gotten something called Security Tool virus on his and we CANNOT GET RID OF...

He is learning the hard way!!

Install "malwarebytes" free from the internet (Best free anti-spyware on the net) / install / update / full scan / remove everything that shows.

My strong advice is to PAY for an anti-virus program as they are far superior to free ones.

Norton Internet Security 2009 Causes Blue Screen of Death.

Hi there
Thats Norton for you! this is a very heavy and memory hungry program, it takes control of your computer and if you have not got enough system or virtual memory it will cause the pc all kinds of problems. To fix this either upgrade the system memory or don't use Norton, use AVG free instead, its a lighter program and lets you have some speed back over the internet.

good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

I keep getting a security alert that says I have 4 virus

That security alert is most likely one of the false positives that are running around the internet.
They tell you that you have a virus and then want you to pay them to get rid of it where in actual fact the only virus you have is them.
Try downloading, installing and running "malwarebytes" I have used this application many times to rid machines of the nonsense you are seeing.
