Some dvd recorders may not compatible with newer dvd-r/+r which are
usually of higher speed x16. But dvd+rw is generally of x4 speed may
have better compatibility. Weak or out of focus laser beam may also
result in disc read/write error, this can be improved a bit if you adjust
the level of the lens assembly closer to the disc carefully by loosening the screws which hold the sliding rods, not more than a half turn at a time and test a disc each time for error. You may want to adjust the laser intensity pot but it should be the last step to try as this will shorten the life of laser diode.
