Hi - I have a Dell 8400, fails post. Diag indicators are A,B,C green and D amber. Sometimes the screen is black with a single blinking cursor and sometimes it shows the Dell splash screen. Cannot get to the point where I may select safe mode, f8 key, etc. I have a P4 with RAID 0. It did fully boot twice but failed with a blue screen soon afterwards. Seems to be the same if I have nothing plugged-in or if I only have the USB keyboard plugged-in. Oh - once it failed with the diag indicators A=amber, B,Cand D=green, Dell splash screen only. I recently uploaded MS updates including SP3 but I operated the PC several days after that, my guess is that the updates are not a factor. Dell service was not able to help me. They suggested I take it to a shop. If I cannot fix or diagnose this I would like a suggestion for getting the data off the RAID disks, maybe a suggestion for a compatible RAID controller card to use with a new machine (yeah, I know, but I waas sloppy with backups). Thanks much

Unfortunately the dell website (not me) is not very helpful. Here's what is says about your diagnostic lights

Hi - I have a Dell 8400, fails post. Diag - 53d4d5f.jpg
Another failure has occurred.

  • Ensure that the cables are properly connected to the system board from the hard drive, CD drive, and DVD drive.
  • If there is an error message on your screen identifying a problem with a device (such as the floppy drive or hard drive), check the device to make sure it is functioning properly.
  • The operating system is attempting to boot from a device (such as the floppy drive or hard drive); check system setup (see "Boot Sequence") to make sure the boot sequence is correct for the devices installed on your computer.
  • If the problem persists, contact Dell.

p.s. sounds like the RAID controller may be bad. If it's not too expensive try to buy the exact same model and replace it and hopefully your RAID 0 array will still be intact

Dell dimension 8400 blinking amber light ethernet port

An Amber blinking power button indicates a low voltage problem. This can be caused by a defective power supply or a defective motherboard. Since you replaced the power supply, my guess is that the motherboard has a problem.
Just to make sure that nothing else is causing the problem, remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cables to CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged.

My 6 year old Dell Dimension 8400 quit working completely.

Depending on the symptoms, you may have different faults.
http://www.fixya.com/support/r4282412-find_no_post_diagnostic_information_dell
Flashing Amber power LED, normally power supply
AAGG Diag LEDs normally bad RAM
Solid Amber Power LED, bad motherboard or Expansion card connected to it.
If you need a motherboard a Precision Workstation 370 motherboard is essentially the same and is available, (8400 motherboards are scarce)

Dell 8400 No Boot, not even POST

It sounds like your bios were improperly flashed or went bad. The X300 SE message is your video card. So your video card works, the system mostly works, but the BIOS isn't starting up. You should contact Dell and tell them the situation.

My dell dimension 8400 canot boot up at all and the Diagnostic Lights not light oso..so wat i can do?

The POWER and DIAG LEDs can give you information. If no DIAG LED look at the POWER LED
http://www.fixya.com/support/r4282412-find_no_post_diagnostic_information_dell
Flashing amber, most likely the power supply
Solid Amber, motherboard or item plugged into the motherboard (Expansion card, external connection etc.)

Dimension e310- Black screen when powering on, 1 & 2 lights blink

Generally, the 1 and 2 Diagnostic LEDs indicate a failure of a PCI expansion card.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim3100/en/sm/adtshoot.htm#wp1130520
So remove any expansion cards, see if anything changes. If it does, one of the PCI cards is suspect.
If the system has an expansion video card in the PCI-E slot, and removing the PCI cards had no effect, remove the PCI-E video card and connect to the intergrated video port (You may have to remove a black cover from the port) and see if you get video. If you do, then the Expansion video card has failed.

Computer Won't Power Up

If the blinking amber LED is on the computer itself and not the monitor, this is most likely a power supply issue. First thing to try would be replace the power supply. If the blinking led is on the monitor, it probably has bad capacitors and needs to be replaced. (or repaired)
