Jenn-Air Microwave vent grill opens and closes

I have a Jenn-Air JMV8166B. It is only 16 months old. Yesterday, the vent grill started opening and closing repeatedly. I unplugged it and replugged it in. The behavior stopped for a while. Then when I used the microwave later again, the grill started opening and closing automatically again. It does not seem to stop. Hitting the stop/cancel button does not stop the behavior.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

I have this same problem occasionally. Pull the vent grill open and look for a white cam that rotates when the microwave is on. To the right of that cam, there are two gray switches. The bottom switch should have a red tab that pops out. When the vent grill opens and closes continuously, the red tab is stuck in. Take a flat screwdriver or tooth pick and push gently in on the red tab to release it. It must get stuck due to grease or dirt accumulation. Good luck.

Thank you, David Bleemel! I searched many websites and read the manual, etc. before happening upon your super-helpful info. It worked like a charm--and I got to feel like a real fix-it wiz armed with only a toothpick, my can-do stubbornness, and the tip you were kind enough to share. Appreciatively, Sheila

My JMV9169BAP microwave vent door stopped opening due to the cam not rotating when the oven was turned on. After reading your post, I figured I'd look for that red tab and when I pushed it in, the cam rotated and now the vent door opens automatically when the oven is on again. Thank you very much!!!

How to uninstall an over the range Jenn-air microwave JMV8166BA

Remove two phillips screws from each side of the microwave. One at the very top and one at the very bottom. Remove the front cover. There will be a couple of other screws and metal stops under the microwave that will need to be removed also. After that, the back of the microwave will need to lifted and move forward just a bit to release the back. Pull the microwave forward and toward the left side, enough to be able to reach behind the right side of the oven and unplug the microwave. Remove the microwave. To reinstall, just reverse these steps. It might help to use a mirror and check out the 110v 60Hz socket in the top right corner of the oven that you will need to plug the microwave back into when you replace it.

I would first suggest checking the bottom door switch and its mount.

If it's not a switch issue, you may have a sticking relay on your control board, which can be economically repaired. Details are here.

I want to remove my jenn air grill completely. How do I cap aluminum exhaust tube, and do I need to disconnect anything else beside the tube and unplugging the unit?? Thank you

The beat method for capping the vent is with aluminum HVAC tape available at any hardware store. You are basically making it rodent proofe.Csisscross the tape and cut a few inches longer so you can tape around the outside with at least one wrap of tape, use a store card to go over tape to remove bubbles and to give it a good seal. You will also have to cap off box where the power cord connects if its all electric. If it is gas you can just close the valve, and cap it with cap availble at same hardware store and use pipe dope or nylon tape (not both). A gas unit just unplugs from a receptical. You may test your work with a 50/50 dishsoap to water mixture in a spray bottle.
Good luck,
mark

Hi. I have samsung microwave oven GE83ZL two years old. I was out for a month. after i came back and starts the oven but its not working grill is ok but microwaves are not heating up the food ! oven works...

check the door safety interlock switches. if failed, they cannot tell the oven that the door is closed and if the door is open, the magnetron will not come on. remove the cover and find the small micro switches neat the door latch system. check them with a ohm meter with the door open ... then closed. of course, you are checking for continuity ...not voltage ... so unplug the oven before you start.

Light won't go on; Model MMV1153WB-O

You can download owner's manuals and installation instructions for several brands (including Amana, Frigidaire, Jenn-Air, Kitchenaid, Litton, Maytag, Roper, Tappan, Thermador and Whirlpool) here.

Enter it as MMV1153WB0 (no dash, zero on the end, not "oh")

Or just get it here, to be more exact.
On page 4, it says:

"Installing/Replacing Filters and Light Bulbs
■ Grease filter: Grease filter is on the underside of microwave
oven. Clean monthly. Slide the filter away from the tab area,
and drop out the filter. To reinstall, place end of the filter into
the opening opposite the tab area, swing up the other end,
and slide it toward the tab area.
■ Charcoal filter: The charcoal filter is behind the vent grille at the
top front of the microwave oven. The charcoal filter cannot be
cleaned, and should be replaced about every 6 months.
Remove 2 screws on the vent grille, tilt the grille forward, lift it
out, and remove filter. To reinstall, place the filter into its slotted
area – wire mesh side up, replace vent grille, and secure with
screws.
■ Cooktop light(s): The cooktop light bulb(s) is(are) located on
the underside of the microwave oven, and is(are) replaceable.
Remove bulb cover screw, and open the bulb cover. Replace
bulb, close bulb cover, and secure with screw.
■ Cavity light: The cavity light bulb is located behind the vent
grille at the top front of the microwave oven, under the bulb
cover, and is replaceable. Remove 2 screws on the vent grille,
tilt the grille forward, and lift it out. Open bulb cover and
replace bulb. Close bulb cover, replace vent grille, and secure
with screws."

HINT: Unplug the oven before removing or installing the bulbs, or you may need this service.

Jenn air micr-/convectionoven arcing while running

There are 3 possible openings that you could be alluding to. One is for the light, one is for the air vent, the 3rd is for the magnatron micro beam energy. The sparking can be from dirt buildup, from a loose connection, from a fan blade rotating or from the scatter blade rotating, or from the magnatron gun shorting, or from the mica cover plate if so equiped. Best to carry it in to a service place; it is usually worth fixing, adn only the magnatron failure would be the highest cost of the repairs. it is at least worth spending a diagnosis cost for someone to tell you the real reason and you'll know for sure if you made the right decision.
