I turn the monitor on and the screen goes black after three seconds.
Hello,
The picture board on your monitor is bad, since it goes black after three seconds, it means the
picture
board of your monitor has developed fault.
The best thing for you
to
do now is to take the monitor to a local repairer within your vicinity to help with the replacement of the picture board
because the fault is not something you can fix yourself. in order not to complicate issues.
Take care.

Try the monitor on another computer that you know works, If it works on another computer then that means you have no video output on the original computer and you'll need to reseat the memory on that computer.
If you get the same response on another computer, then that means the monitor is bad and you'll need to replace it.

Start up in safe mode... see if you have monitor set to 1600x1050 (to high) stays on for 3 seconds... shuts off. If you have a **** video card (intel 945) it won't allow right highest native resolution which is 1600x900.

How old is the computer? Make sure that the power light comes onto the monitor when you plug it in, should be orange and then turn green when video card syncs with it when PC is turned on. If you are getting black screen when PC is powered on:
1. Bad video card
2. Bad video cable
3. Bad monitor
1Solution: Try using a different monitor attached to this same PC and see if it works. If it does, then its the monitor, its cable, or its power supply. If it doesn't work, then its the video card or the video cable coming from monitor.

More often then not, this is attributed to a failing Backlight Inverter. A Backlight Inverter, is a power board mounted below the screen that actually send power to the Lamp inside the LCD itself. Check to see, when it goes out if there isn't still some images faint in the screen. If this is the case take it to a local repair shop and have them order one and replace it. repair cost for this shuold be around 65-100 dollars.
If this helps, please rate my solution. Have a great day.

May be a failing power or display board inside. In the last 5 or 6 yrs the stuff coming from China has been using a low grade knockoff version of the electrolytic capacitors and when the unit gets (on average) to about 2 to 4 yrs old the capacitors fail as the preservative that is supposed to be in the "dielectric" compound in them is not there and the capacitor fails. If you look at a circuit board and see those little cans on the board with shrink wrap on them with one side marked with a white strip of negatives and a K dimpled into the top - those are the electrolytics. The K is a weak point put there as a safety valve so if the capacitor fails it blows out there instead of exploding like a firecracker. Well a good sign of failure is a swollen top or even what is known as "bird poop" leaking from the top. Problems can range from no power at all to freaky occasional problems like yours. Capacitors cost very little but involve teardown of the monitor, checking the values of the bad ones, locating suitable replacements, desoldering the bad and soldering on new. Once new ones are installed then it's testing time.
You may want to locate a shop that does board level work to open it and at least assess the problem.
