Open up the unit and clean all the scanning surfaces with a soft cloth dampened with window cleaner. Black lines is usually dirt or a piece of stuck Scotch tape.
Sometimes you may see vertical streaks/black lines on the faxes you receive. Either your machine's primary corona wire for printing may be dirty, or the sending party's fax scanner may be dirty. Clean your primary corona wire. I recommend placing the drum unit on a drop cloth or large disposable paper to avoid spilling and scattering toner. 1. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the tab from right to left several times. 2. Return the tab and snap it into the Home position, (Caution: If the tab is not at the Home position, printed pages may have vertical stripes). 3. Reinstall the drum unit into the machine. 4. Close the front cover. 5. Plug in the power cord first, and then plug in the telephone cord. or ask the sender to make a copy to see if the problem is with the sending machine. Try receiving from another fax machine. If the problem continues, call Brother Customer Service at: 1-800-284-4329 (in USA) or 1-877-BROTHER (in Canada).
PLACE A PLAIN PIECE OF WHITE PAPER IN MACHINE AND TAKE A COPY. IF NO LINES ARE ON IT THEN THE LINES ARE COMING FROM THE MACHINE THAT IS SENDING TO YOU BUT IF U DO HAVE THE LINES THEN PRINT HEAD IS PROBABLY FAULTY OR DIRTY.
If the received fax's are ok and there is no line; and you only get the line when you make a copy....I assume the people you send to are also getting the black line down the page,?? then the problem is in the optics...favorite is some kind of dirt, glue, or corrector fluid on the glass that the original passes over when you make the copy.
You sure can - the issue is that there is something on the thin strip of glass where the copy goes through from the feeder at the top - follow these directions and you should clear the problem right up.
If its reduced in size during transmit or copy then simply place a letter size document in the feeder and close the two sliders up to the sides of the paper. If you don't close the slider up to the paper it will go into auto reduction
