I assume you mean how to connect to a cable modem.
A short network patch cord is used to connect the wireless router WAN port to the cable modem (or ADSL).
Turn on the router.
Unplug the cable modem (or ADSL) for ten seconds and plug it back in. (this causes the router to connect to the modem)
Use your correctly setup wireless router to access the Internet. (use WPA and a unique SSID for the router for security) (WEP is not secure anymore)
In case you really mean 'router', connect the wireless WAN port to one of the router's device ports (1-4) with the network patch cable.

Here's a link to the Cisco (Linksys) site with directions on how to connect your range expander.

I purchased a wre54g range expander and have tried everything but it doesnt work

Who is the manufacturer of your wireless router?
check the IP address of your router.
connect the computer to the router and check the Ip address of the computer and the default gateway number. Default gateway is the IP address of your router. suppose the default gateway is 192.168.1.1. then open the set up page of the router . check the wireless settings of the router SSID ,channel and the security settings. Do not change the settings on the router.
If you are using WPA2 security settings them that will network on the WRE54G.
Now your range expander and the router IP addresses should be in the same range. Suppose you router IP address is 192.168.x.y and the IP address of the WRE54G is by default 192.168.1.240.
Now the x in the router IP address should be 1.
If it is, then connect the WRE to the router and open the set up page of WRE. change the wireless settigns on the WRE and power cycle the WRE and the router.
It should work

I have a two wire router trying to hook up to run my laptop

You need to run from the DSL modem into the ethernet port at the very top of the 1701hg. Use your other 4 ports below to send one the computer and one to your vonage. You will no longer need to "jump" though your vontage unit. Other than connecting the power cables, you are all hooked up.

Wireless g range extender

Hi there ....

before anything else, can you please what is the version of range expander is is wre54g v1,v2,v3?

1) either which, please do verify your wireless settings of your DLINK router
-- the network name or ssid
-- security if you enabled any on your router
-- wireless channel
-- please check the default gateway of your router if it is 192.168.1.1

** please take note also that the best location for your expander would be inbetween your router and your computers

2) once you have gathered the wireless settings
-- you would need to manually configure your expander coz it didnt work .. Please remember that the LINKsys expander is designed to work with linksys routers, so it may or may not work.. I just need to set your expectations on this ...

3) once you have verfied the default gateway of your DLink router ... please reply to this thread and let us proceed in configuring your wre...

2wire 1701HG Gateway Router VPN Setup

Go to http://gateway.2wire.net and click on the firewall icon. Click on firewall settings and, if prompted, enter your system password to reach the advanced settings page. select the computer that will function as the VPN server. In the left column, select PPTP server. click on Add, then done. or try changing the IP scheme to the 172.16.0.0/255.255.0.0 or 10.0.0.0/255.255.0.0 schemes by accessing gateway.2wire.net, go to home network icon, then advanced settings. but if you manually configure or disable dhcp, be sure to write down the subnet mask & IP assigned to the 2wire then click on save. if all else fails, run it on DMZPlus mode, however this solution will allow all inbound traffic to the computer. if it still doesn't work on DMZPlus mode, the VPN is either using the same IP scheme, is using IPSec 50 or 51, or will not work with the 2Wire gateway.

Wireless router

What is the make and model of your router?

What type of internet access do you have (DSL or cable)?

Are you connecting the computer with a cable or via wireless?

If you have verified that the cable connections are correct then I would try to power cycle next.

1. Unplug the modem, router and turn off the computer.
2. Plug the modem in and wait 5 minutes.
3. Plug the router back in.
4. Turn the computer back on.

Let me know the details for the above questions if we need to go further.

Wireless router

I have a friend that works at 2 wire. I've bought a couple of their products. And I'm a computer geek. Unless I miss my guess it shouldn't matter what is plugged into it, be it laptop or desktop. It may be locked down to the MAC address on the NIC, but I doubt it. Anyway you'd just browse to it's embedded webpage and change the setting. The IP address is the same as the gateway address on the laptop plugged into it.

I think I bought that model for my dad but I can't remember the exact model number on it. Anyway the one I bought, and set up for my Dad, I had several different computers hooked up to it and never had a problem.
