Yeah.. Thats the real problem.. On the test monitor, there is no picture. Although everything is on.. I think it's the harddrive jumpers, or something in BIOS that is not allowing the harddrive to be recognized..

Unplug the hard drive from the computer and reboot the computer.... if it says that insert system disc, then your bios is working perfect.... if it still didnt give any response then you can reset the bios once and reconfigure it....

The answer is Yes.

Connect just the EIDE harddrive from the Compaq.
Make sure the correct jumper pins on the back of the harddrive, have a jumper cap on them to set them to Single;

OR,

The IDE harddrive model you have may Not use a jumper cap on any jumper pins, for some models of harddrives, to set the harddrive as Single.

Look up the harddrive jumper settings on the internet.
Start with the model number on the label of the harddrive.

Example; WD2500JB
Western Digital 250GB harddrive that is IDE. (EIDE)

You will need a SATA optical drive now.
BIOS Setup > Boot Options > Set the first boot device to CDROM.
Install Windows disk.

Use IDE harddrive, and IDE optical drive on the same flat ribbon IDE cable?
Can be done, but usually is a HEADACHE, and MAY not work.
BIOS looks to see what drives are connected. It looks for the drive with the Operating System on it. (Windows)

Now put a disk in the optical drive. Time has to be divided between the harddrive, and the optical drive.
IF it does work; when you are using the computer, and the optical drive you will know the real meaning of Slow.

Have a SATA optical drive?

Computer will not turn on by outside push button. When it is plugged in and looking at the motherboard there is one green light on the board and thats it,if I push the test button on the power supply a red...

You can remove components from the pc and try to switch it on and see if it works.

eg.I would try a different power supply.
Then try different ram,
Then disconnect the Harddrive

If when you remove a component the pc starts, it's that component thats the problem

Jumper settings

If you try to enter in safe mode or at last known config and the laptop reboots or freezes then you need to reinstall the operating system if you want to use that hard drive on hp pavilion a1000n. The laptops have different chipset and XP requires to be the same or similar chipset to boot properly.

No video etc.

on the motherboard will be a JBAT1 terminal with the jumper across pins 1-2, so put jumper on pins 2-3, then back to pins 1-2. If not JBAT1, then it may be a 2 pin terminal called CLRCMOS, of which you put a jumper across the two pins for seconds then remove. Although, i can't think of a way to update the bios without seeing whats on the screen.

No power to monitor

Is the Bios rom set to the on board settings for the video driver?? Did you allocate enough ram for your video driver in the Bios rom?? If all thats ok then the on board video driver is bad or not configured properly. Try disableling the On board video driver and stick a video driver card in and try and see if the monitors working correctly. Good Luck
