Amp error i have a vsx d412 everytime i turn it on now i get this amp error mess and it turns off

You could have a blown channel. This will keep your receiver from turning on. It is a protect feature to keep you from damaging more components

I also have the VSX D412 and DirectTV. My DirectTV remote controls the D412 fine, but I did have the same problem you're experiecing with a Sylvania flat screen that the remote wouldn't operate. I corrected my problem by turning the TV off, then back on using the TV's remote, then telling the DirectTV system that I didn't know the model number and let the system search for the code. Hope this helps.

This could be a short on one or more of the speaker cables. I suggest you remove all speaker cables and try the amp again. If it does not switch off this would indicate a short on a speaker cable, so turn it off again and reconnect one speaker cable and try again. Do this with each cable in turn until the problem re-occurs, and you have now found the offending speaker cable. Check it for shorts at both ends.

This may not be the problem, of course, but should be your first investigation.

This is the same as "protect" mode. Basically the unit has detected a problem with the output stage of the amplifier and has shut down to prevent further damage. Usually this is caused by defective output transistors. Expect a parts cost in the range of $15-$40. Add in the local labor rate for the total repair bill.
