My tub overflow and bottom drain appear to be further apart for a standard tub drain assembly. The brass and copper flex assembly i bought is about 2 inches short. Can I get a brass extension piece and what is it called?

Overflow? Seal around drain may be good enough for shower, but leaks with a little more pressure from the filled tub. Filled tub may flex the tub and drain components. What about the overflow. I bet some water is going over, but it isn't used for showers. Double check. Paper towels tied in stratigic locations always help me find a leak. Leak makes the towel soak up water nearby. It's most wet at the point of leak.
Assuming you have a lever operated tub stopper, with the lever mounted in the overflow plate, a common malady is the decay of the internal end of the lever, leaving the stopper at the bottom of its pathway preventing drainage.
remove the overflow plate and carefully slide the stopper assembly out of the overflow... you will know almost immediately if the assembly has come apart. if its intact, run a small diameter sewer snake down the open overflow to clear the tub's drain trap. if it has indeed come apart, remove the connecting rod and stopper from the overflow, you may have to fish for it some. Happy hunting....
reassembly is simply reversing the removal process once you have replaced any broken parts or cleared the trap.
I always use white silicone - putty always cracks and leaks. Silicone makes a sort of custom rubber gaskit and never leaks. Clean off with paper towels immediately before it skins over
Replace it. Remove the two screws. With the lever in the up position, pull the assembly up and out. You may have to jiggle it to remove it. Remove the cotter pin to disengage the faceplate from the linkage. The faceplate is a standard part that can be gotten from any plbg supply or Home Depot. While you have the drain assy out, you may want to grease the plunger with silicone grease or faucet grease. This will make the drain easier to operate.
you can remove the overflow plat,(check to see if you have 1 or 2 screws in the plate, the new one must match. The strainer piece in the bottom of the tub,is difficult to remove, but it can be done with a little effort and wd-40,the straineris a standard 1.5 inch npt (national pipe thread)
Take screws out of plate on tub over flow and pull up trip lever. sometimes they move and need adjusting . It shoul dhave 2 bolts holding the plate on tub at overflow and work with it to remove trip lever assembly once out run some water down drain to let you know if that is th eproblem then you can adjust on trip lever assembly by moving the little barrel like plug near the handle a little will increase water flow out of tub once you put it back in you can adjust it out it back in with out bolting back turn water on and move lever to see if it drains any better.
The overflow drain / stopper lever has 2 screws holding it in place, place a rag over the drain and remove the 2 screws. then remove the drain assembly, it should slide right out. You can now clean the assembly, you may still need a piece of wire to fish the hair out.
