EI Systems 3085 Laptop will not charge battery

I have a laptop EI 3085 bought at PCWorld about a year ago. Some weeks ago it stopped charging the battery. I have measured the voltages from the PC and they seem reasonable - about 12.5VDC. I have replaced the battery with a new one but still no luck. The small icon at bottom left (XP) permanently says "0% remaining (charging)."

Yuo should measure the voltages from the charger not the PC.
May be the charger is broken.

It would hardly be the charger, seeing as I stated that computer boots ok would it.

Hi, I have eMachines E640-N833G25Nnks, P/N: LX.NA102.059, Model: NEW85, S/N: LXNA10205902804E2A1601. It is: proc: AMD Phenom II X3 Mobile Processor N830, graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250, mem: 3GB,...

I Googled to see if there was any problems related to battery sensors, seems eMachines laptops don't have that problem, the laptop runs well while plugged in, so it's not internal circuitry, I believe it's a battery problem, as you say charging level has been decreasing progressively, try your battery on another laptop to see if the battery is the problem and just in case try a friend's battery on your laptop to completely eliminate doubts about battery sensors, if you don't have a friend with a similar laptop I would go the safe way and send the battery for replacement, if the store where you bought it is in the same country you should get the laptop there so they check out what's going on, if you live in a different country read the manual or click "eMachines customer support" to see if there's any tech support near your city, I still believe it's a battery problem.
Not I'm gonna give you some advice on taking care of your laptop's battery: - When you get new batteries make sure you charge them at least 12 hours before using it. - If you're not going to use your laptop in a while (one or two weeks) get the battery to full charge and then deattach it from the computer, put it back in if you're going to use it. - If using your battery periodically get it to full charge and deplete your battery's energy completely by using the computer until it turn's off itself and then recharge it completely again at least once a week.
If you have any questions, I'll be glad to help. Have a nice day.

Ifthe laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be wornout. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cyclesand will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% andgradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up atall. ORThe battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected thebattery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. Ifthe battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to bereplaced.

My aspire 5740 showes 81% available but not charging, checked all power lines etc on balanced power. Bought laptop 3 weeks ago till today it charged up

Hi

Dont be panic. Your laptop has absolutely no problem.Your manufacturer had set a 80-20 policy for the laptop battery charging such that the battery wont be charged to 100 percent but it will charged only upto 80 percent. The makers of the lap are doing this because to give good life to the battery. You can change it by going into the power options inside control panel.

Laptop battery

It does charge until the battery reaches full charge, then charger stops and laptop use adapter's power. The whole system is thought to not damage or wear the battery while in charge. Leave battery safely inside your Dell while using it with power adaptor, it should not make any difference in your battery life.
