The light is controlled by a door switch. Look for a button or lever where the door can strike it. Try gently pulling on the switch while the door is open. If the light flickers, you need a door switch. If not, it likely is still the door switch. They are not expensive but can be tough to change, depends on the model. The light in the freezer and infrared light for - adec639.jpg
The switch will mount a bit like this. May have a lever or a plastic pin on top. Can be round. The fingers hold the switch into the panel. These fingers need to be compressed to the body to get the switch out.

Have you checked the light switch. It is common for the light switch to also keep the icemaker from driving the ice through the door. It shouldn't keep the icemaker from making ice though. It could be the icemaker being bad or the water valve being bad.

The mechanical shutoff arm on the older ice
makers has been replaced with an electronic
ice level control system. This system is located
on either side of the freezer liner and utilizes
infrared light technology to sense the level of
ice in the door-mounted ice container.

Used to make several batches of ice a day, now 1-2 a week.

If your refrig has the icebucket on the door and the icemaker on the roof of the fridge then you have two eyes on each side of the freezer....they are bad. If not then the icemaker module is bad. If you have a regular icemaker that hangs from the left side of the freezer then the module is bad. Also......Is your freezer still working good? Icemakers will not work if the temp is not low enough. Are you sure the icemaker is cycling but not making the full number of cubes? Low water pressure will force the icemaker to make only a few cubes at a time

Whirlpool icemaker microswitch location

If the icemaker is still in the refrig ,(easily removed with 1 screw ) pour about 2/3 cup of water into it . Also check the black fill hose which is above the icemaker fill cup , to see if it is frozen closed . If the icemaker dumps the cubes , and doesn't refill with water , replace the water inlet valve behind the refrig . If it doesnt dump the ice , replace the icemaker . My parts site is down , or I would give you part numbers for the water inlet valve and the complete icemaker .

The laser light should flash 2 times , pause , flash 2 times etc , if working correctly . If the laser light is not on , then the icemaker is in the harvest mode . If it stays off , icemaker is bad . If you close the flap on the left side of the freezer , the light should go off , until you release the flap . If these factors are ok , then the optics are ok .

I have a Whirlpool refrige. side by side and the ice maker has stopped working. The infrared light keeps blinking. I have unplugged it a couple of times as well as turned the infrared off. Any advice?

The laser , is supposed to blink . This laser , tells the icemaker to stop making ice , when the bin is full . Pour about 2/3 cup of water into the icemaker . If it doesn't dump the cubes into the bin , the icemaker is bad . Or , if there is ice in the bin , which hasn't dumped , the icemaker is bad . If the icemaker dumps the ice ( from water pour ) , then look above the fill cup , and see if the black fill tube is frozen . If so , then replace the water valve and turn the freezer temp down slightly . It will take several days for this fill line inside freezer to thaw . If icemaker dumps , and black tube NOT frozen , replace the water valve . The valve , is where the wall water line connects to on the refrig

The general rule is to put 2/3 cup of water into icemaker , and if it dumps , but doesn't fill , replace the water inlet valve . If it doesn't dump , replace the icemaker Pt # 2198597 . Check the black fill tube above the icemaker fill cup , to see if it is clogged with ice . The fill line runs from the back of the refrig , between the liner and cabinet ( unaccessable ) , and down to the icemaker . Some of this model refrig , come with a coupling on the back , which you can disconnect and blow thru , to see if it is clear to the icemaker . If you do not have a coupling , you may want to aquire one Pt # 4211117 , in case this happens again , also , turn your freezer control down slightly , it will be a quick troubleshoot step . It sounds like the optics are ok , but I'll still give you the information .
Open the freezer door and if you get 2 pulses followed by a pause repeatedly , press in on the left side flapper door and the optic should stay on steadily . If you still get the 2 pulse and pause , then the optics are faulty . If you get no light , the icemaker is in the harvest mode ,( trying to dump ice ) . If the icemaker arm is in the normal position and no light , the optics are faulty . When the optics are faulty , replace both sides , the emiter board and reciever board . They come togather in a kit Pt # 4389102 .
