This is not a question about the one that eats the tapes, but another VHS I have, and I can't remember the brand, but I put in this really old movie that had been out in a metal building for about 10 years, and played the movie, but no picture, just sound, then I put in a couple other films, ones that are in good condition, expecting to be able to watch them, but same results.

Lots of parts can damage the tape. For example if the tape is not pulled back inside when it ejects. Another good cause is the pinch roller being damaged or out of place.
The best way to find out is put an old tape in the machine (or at least one that you don't mind be chewed up, whilst the top cover is off and you can watch the tape playing. You should be able to see the problem then and take action to correct it.
You need to purchase a VHS head cleaner or clean the heads and pinch rollers by hand. remove cover and lid to drive system. you will see all the tape guides, rollers and heads. use Q-tips and denatured alcohol and clean every thing the tape touches. swap q-tips as they get dirty.
First, you should keep away from the T-160 tapes as they are thinner and more likely to jam. The T-120 or less sizes are better. Next, use high quality name brand tape - not the off-brands found in the bargain bin.
Do the regular maintenance. All tape is "dirty" (including cassette, 8 track, reel to reel, etc.) and will deposit dirt on the tape heads and "transport" mechanism. Transport consists of capstan and pinch rollers that push / pull the tape in and out of the housing. when dirty, they slip and interfere with the "pick up" of a quality picture from the tape. Use of a quality wet cleaning system at regular intervals (or whenever picture quality deteriorates or tapes jam) is highly recommended. Here are some googled results for wet VHS cleaning systems:
internal misalignment causes the tape to mount incorrectly, grabbing and eating the tape. must find a repair facility to realign. do not attempt yourself as the internal mechanisms are so delicate it is easy to cause another problem
Hunnn....Eats the tapes, with salt & paper?..just a joke!
The tape runs on a guide ( sort of a tiny ledge )when it is fully engaged. The tape cartgage is loaded ' sucked ' in with gears that drop the cartage on top of other switches to give direction, so that "fingers" pull the tape towards the reading\recording heads. When the tape IS aligned properly, BUT is locked in the proper position the tape will NOT touch the upper or lower "ledge" that keeps it accross the heads. When the tape is NOT aligned the upper or lower tape WILL touch causeing damage. OPEN THE CARTGAGE ,Look to see if the upper & lower of the tape is damaged. Now when you say "eats the vhs tape" Does the tape comes out WRINKLE, CRINKLED,CRAMPED UP??? Then that could be ANY wheel with a black rubber rim. going bad. replace if you can. but they are VERY HARD TO FIND if u don't know what u are doing.
unit need to be cleaned or have parts replaced if they got bad enough. only, only, only use the more expensive JVC tapes. They keep their tension far better than cheaper brands. Also, they won't rub off their oxide coatings on the heads as easily, avoiding the 'clogging' of the heads (which thereby requires constant cleaning-further damaging the heads).
Hi Sorry but you may need some repairman to look at the machine. There could be a problem with the transport, winding around head, pinch rollers dirty, belts gone bad and other faults-electronic components gone bad.Take an estimate from the repairman and see if worth to repair the machine. Did you try another tape? How old is it ? Hope this helps jay
