Fridge compressor keeps working all the time

I have a GE double door refrigerator and I get the feeling that the thermostat mechanism is not functioning. For the past few days I find that the fridge is working all the time, the thermostat is set to the midway position( position 5 on scale of 0-9) and on turning the temperature knob down the compressor is not cutting off except when the knob is turned to 0 position. The fridge is cooling well and the freezer compartment is also working well. How long can the compressor run without shutting off for some time and what do I need to do.

Check the thermostat bulb in the freezer section. If it is encased in ice defrost for 24hrs. If this does not correct it fit new thermostat, but take care not to damage bulb or tubing it is gas filled.

Have a GE DSS25JFPHWW that does not get cold enough. At coldest settings fridge temp is 39 and freezer temp is 33. Compressor is working. What should we do? Have cleaned coils and replaced parts.

I suggest you use a voltmeter to check whether the defrost panel is on all the time or just disconnect it for testing.

If the compressor is running and it doesn't get cold (with defrost definitely off) it indicates the refrigerant has leaked away. As a sort of double-check, if it is working and pumping refrigerant around, one of the pipes from the compressor will get quite hot and the condenser coils will grow warm.

How do I repair the fridge thermostat?

Is there a flap that allows cold air from the freezer section to enter the fridge, or is it a separate system altogether.
In what way is the thermostat "broken"?

Please check step by step as following.
1. Compressor working.( keeping your arm on condenser coil to feel warm)
2. Check for whistling sound in freezer after few seconds of compressor starting. (If not, system chocked. call repairman)
3. If no chock, check thermostat setting. Keep freezer temp between -14 & 8* F and Fridge temp
36&46*F.
4. Check thermostat sensor is working by turning counterclockwise. If your fridge shuts off, it's o.k.)
5. If not, replace thermostat.

With your statement, it's cleared that thermostat cuts off is malfunctioned. Replace thermostat.

HAVE A GE PROFILE SIDE-BY-SIDE REFRIGERATOR ABOUT 10 YEARS OLD THAT NEEDS A GARAGE REFRIGERATOR KIT INSTALLED. IN MY UNHEATED GARAGE AND NOT WORKING IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES. TRIED A 100w LIGHTBULB...

You need to put a heat source in the fridge compartment near the fridge thermostat. Try putting a lower wattage bulb (40w) into the fridge compartment. Or even try this, take the door switch out of the fridge and short the two leads together. Tape the exposed ends with electrical tape and that should provide enough heat to keep your compressor on long enough to keep the freezer cold. Just remember to put the switch back in in the spring and summer months or you will have a real high electrical bill. Hope this helps you.

Hi!!

Let's try this:

Check temp. settings the freezer knob controls thermostat settings, set it about one third of the scale.

The fridge knob, (set it half way) controls a door actuator that lets cold air blown by the little fan in freezer go from evaporator (the one that gets iced up) to the fridge, so, the little fan in freezer is the one in charge of making your fridge work. CHECK FAN, it should come on when you open freezer door for a couple of minutes, it must sound strong, and if you put your hand in front of one of the fridge's air vents you should feel cold air coming out, if no or weak breeze comes out, check passages for obstrucion, if none, replace motor, (about 20 at your hardware store)

I assume your mechanic already checked thermostat and defrost operation, because, if your timer is right, the defrost mechanism will de-ice the evaporator about four times a day.

Check your drain hose for blockage.

Let me know how it worked out, good luck.

I have a GE GSS25LGMF side x side refrigerator. The compressor never shuts off and everything in the fridge section is freezing. Is this a thermostat problem?

it could be the damper part number WR49X10091,if the damper door isn't closing correctly cold air will just keep coming into the fridge side from the freezer, usually the damper door opens to let the cold air in when the fridge starts warming up and when it gets cold enough the door will close but your damper is stuck open

Hi, this problem is going to be with the running thermostat2.gif (cold Control). It has gone bad and stays open which in turn will keep the compressor running continually and will cause the fridge2.gif to get colder and freeze food. It can normally be located in the control panel inside the fridge (it is the control that has wires, the other is the damper). Locate the thermostat and replace it. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to comment again. Good Luck!! Mike
