If this is occurring with multiple cards, and is also saying "card locked" even though the tiny slide switch is in the unlocked position,see this link for the fix.

Hi Is this the camera memory or the SD memory card.You can opt to transfer some of your pictures to a secondary storage device probably a computer. To delete,just scroll the picture, select on options and then delete. Or just replace the SD card and store the full one.
Camera cards are never to be formatted on the computer....only in the camera. "card error" usually always means you need to format the card in the camera. This will erase it so download any pics you want to save first.
The S50 uses SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card, and will not work in the S50. You will have to confine your choices to cards 2GB and smaller.
Download any pictures using a card reader. Then, format the card in the camera. There is a "reset" entry in the setup menu. If you can't access it, try this: remove the card and battery...press all the buttons...insert the card and then the battery.
try using another memory card. I would take the memory card back to the shop and ask for another one. I had the same problem. it was the card, not the camera.
