Try downloading VLC media player which can play any video format besides a couple. Windows media player does not work for all video codecs

Sadly DVD players get hot when playing and electronic devices don't like being hot. Without knowing more - such as is there power getting to it. I can't really say more.

Yes I would replace it, the laser pickup assembly is showing early signs of failure, it will often play the regular dvd movies because there is less demand on the laser tracking system. The cost to replace is cheaper than repairing the unit.

Have you updated your Blu-ray player firmware this month from Samsung.com? It looks like the latest updated was from Dec. 1, 2010. I was having the same issue and downloading/installing the update resolved the issue...I'm watching the movie now but before the update I was having the same issue you reported. Well if the regular dvd's dont work.. I would recommend you to buy Blu-Ray movies instead.. PS3 is the best known blu-ray player. buy at least one blu-ray movie and try that.
