Hi: I have a SDHC 16GB card using by the Lumix FZ35 camera. It worked fine on the first 4 days of my trip and all of a sudden, it is now displayed with ''INSERT SD CARD AGAIN'' message whether I try to shoot or view pictures from the camera. The SDHC card is reading fine by my laptop computer. Any reason for this and how to resolve this issue. Very frustrating!!

I did not remove the SDHC card from the camera and peek from the computer. I try to format my card again from the camera (Panasonic FZ35) but have no luck in doing so. It still shows "INSERT SD CARD AGAIN" message on the LCD of the camera and all the other menu options are not available when the SDHC card is in the camera. Any suggestion that I can use my camera to reformat the SDHC card? The card is reading fine from the computer.

Hi: I have saved all the pictures on the card and have tried to press the reset from the menu of the camera without the SDHC card plugged in. Then re-insert the SDHC card (which is still readable by my Windows 7 laptop) to the camera. The LCD on the camera still display the "INSERT SD CARD AGAIN" message. At this point, the menu on the camera is no longer accessable. Any idea to do next? Thanks for your help so far.

Yes, I did remove the SDHC card and inserted into the slot of my laptop and backup or download all of the pictures in there. When I remove the SDHC card from the computer, I always use the "Safely Remove Hardware" tool to do that and make sure the card is offline before I pull it from the computer. In addition, I even tried to reformat the SDHC on the laptop in FAT32 format and reinsert it to the camera and try to reformat it by the camera. However, the camera that I have would not recognize the card and the menu to format the card was no longer available after the SDHC card was inserted in the camera. I need some help in trying to reformt the card in hoping that the camera will re-recognize it and able to use it again. Very frustrating.....

Hmmm....I can understand the part that maybe the card being formatted by the computer will need to be reformatted again by the camera before it can be used by the camera. Maybe the formatting process of the camera will need to copy some folders and files to support the use of the SDHC card for its I/O operation. However, basically, most of the digital camera will use FAT32 file system format on the SD cards. If I reformat the SDHC card in FAT32 file system using my computer, the card should be able to be read by the digital camera and can be reformatted by the digital camera as well. In my case, the digital camera does not allow me to even format the SDHC card. This is the part that I am frustrated about. When I purchase a SDHC card off the shelve, it does not have any diffentiation that it can only be used by the computer or digital camera. To my knowledge, as long as the digital device can perform FAT32 file system I/O and support the SDHC format, it should be able to read and write or formatting the device again.

I appreciate your help and I was totally not aware of that I should separate the use of the SDHC card between digital cameras and computers. Thank you for your patience with me in this issue. Just one last question, when I get a brand new SDHC card to be used by the FZ35 again, shall I first format it again on the camera first before I try to use it to take pictures. Thanks again!

At any time did you insert the card into your computer to "have a look" and then remove the card without using the "safely remove hardware" function? You may now need to download the pics from your card to the computer, then format the card in the camera to get it to work properly again.

Formatting the card in the camera will erase it so please download any pics first using a separate card reader if necessary. Then, go into the camera menu and find "reset"...follow the on-screen instructions. Then, insert the card and find "format" in the menu...follow the on-screen instructions. Let me know of your progress.

I'm still not clear how you're downloading the pics from your card. Are you connecting the camera to the computer using a USB cord or are you inserting the card into a slot on the computer or in a separate card reader. In any case, you must use the "safely remove hardware" function each time you disconnect what ever method you use. Also, make sure the slide switch on the side of the card is in the unlocked position.

I'm glad you were able to save your pics. However, formatting a card meant to be used in a camera in the computer will usually corrupt it for further use by the camera. You can keep trying to format it in the camera and you may get lucky. You can even try resetting your camera again. Even try a "manual reset" Here's how...remove the card and battery...press all the buttons...leave it alone for 20 minutes...insert the card and then the battery...turn it on.
Also, be sure no fingerprints or dirt are on the card contacts.

OK...apparently what I'm telling you is falling on deaf ears. It is common knowledge that formatting a card in the computer will often, but not always, corrupt it for further use by the camera. This is not my opinion but a known issue among thousands of professionals. You may have gotten lucky doing it your way in the past but, that's what it was...luck. Obviously, considering your current problems, your luck has run out. My best wishes to you.

Yes, always format a new card in the camera and from time to time after that. I've always downloaded my pics to my computer and then formatted the card in the camera every time....never have any problems with my cards.

My Lumix FT2 had the same problem. I fix it by formatting the SD card via the camera using the solution provided by Webby. Thanks Webby.Use the "Menu Set" button to enter the menu. Highlight the movie icon on the left hand side under the "intelligent auto" icon.Select REC MODE then select AVCHD lite. Then select the spanner icon under the movie icon and enter the setup menu.Menu 5 has the "FORMAT" option. Format SD and exit and the problem is solved.

My camera doesn't see SD 16GB anymore. Worked fine until a few days ago. SD works fine on PC

Try inspecting the memory card slot, eventually with a magnifying glass. Sometimes just a little bit of dust, a small paper or other debris, can block data transfer. Be sure al contacts on the card, but also in the camera are clean and shining. Never use sharp tools in or around a camera. Don't scratch the contact points.
And to make sure you can put pictures on a memory card, there must be space. If possible try to format the card in the camera. Just to make sure the camera sees the correct file system on the memory card.

How do I format the SDHC card on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35

I'm supplying you with a link to a PDF manual, I'm not sure how this will open on your computer but it should look like a review page right below the pictures of the camera is a bar within the bar will be "manual" click on that and a PDF download page/box opens. The PDF file is a good size at 17mb click on that and your computer will download the file.

Another thing that must be done to an SD or SDHC memory card is making sure the protection lock is in the correct orientation to receive data from the camera I'll include a diagram, it's from a Canon manual but all the Sd and SDHC memory card operate in the same manner.
Diagram.

From reading the manual it continually points to page 37 which is part of the camera set up menu.
It doesn't show a window however I would assume you would enter the set up mode and us the arrow keys to select "Format" it's the 3rd from the bottom of the set up menu page. Once there follow the on screen instruction. Here is a screen shot of the format instructions from page 37 of this manual.

Hope this was a help, the instruction in the manual are a bit vague.

How big of a memory card can I use in my panasonic lumix DMC-TZ1 camera? 2gbs , 4gbs or 8 gbs. thank you from Douglas James [email protected]

Doug,

The Panasonic DMC-TZ1 camera supports SDHC cards. SDHC is a "Secure Digital High Capacity" memory card, and the spec says an SDHC capable device can use any SDHC card - so, you can go 16GB, 32GB or more - limited only by how much money you want to spend.

Enjoy your camera!
