Hello rjjgraphics.
This is a serious hardware issue in the unit and in most cases , the unit needs to be replaced, so there is a less chance of the issue getting resolved.

Thx
All the best

SOURCE: I have a printer ?HP c7280 All-in-one?a message,

The ink system failure message has a chance to be fixed or it may be a permanent issue. It can be pointing toward a firmware failure in the printer and if that is the case the following steps should fix it. Press and hold the ?*? key. Press the ?#? key and release both keys. Display should say ?Enter Special Key Combo? Press and release in sequence the "1?, ?2? and ?3? buttons. Display should say ?Support? and display the FW rev (something like R0631R) Mine reads R0631M . Press and release the right arrow button until the display says ?System Configuration Menu?. Press and release the ?OK? button. Display should say ?Hardware failure status?. If not there already, Arrow Key over to ?Hardware failure status?, Press and release the ?OK? button. Display should say ?Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear?. Press and release the ?OK? Button. Message changes to ?Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue?. Press and release the ?CANCEL? button as many times as necessary, so that, either the ?Welcome to Photosmart Express? screen appears, or, the ?Ink System Failure? screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE. Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet. Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer. Turn the unit on. The printer may display message ?USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER? followed by ?PRESS OK TO CONTINUE?. Press OK. The Printer will start the ?ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS?. Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page. Good Luck!

SOURCE: How do i repair: hp Photosmart C7280 Printer ink

Try holding down the ok -- cancel -- black -- color buttons with 4 fingers while at the same time powering the unit off. Keep them held down till it is off. Then turn it back on normally & it should try to do "Maintenance" & you hear a whirling noise --- that is the ink pump spinning to try & pump in ink to the print head.
Here are the details. Got the Ink System Failure message. The error code shows was '0xc18a0005'. The tech had me press and hold the '*' key on the key pad, then press the '#' key and release them both. Then he had me enter '123' to enter maintenance mode. He then had me press the right arrow (beside the OK button) until System Config. menu appeared on panel. Then pressed OK two times to clear the error condition, then cancel two or three times to return to the top menu. Then powered off and back on, printed a test page just fine, copied a document fine.

Print cartridges would not move to center when opening lid so that ink could be replaced

There could be a paper jam in the printer head clearning system. If the head cleaning system is not completing the cleaning motion cycle the carriage will not move the catridge to the centre.

How do I fix "ink system failure oxc18a0206" message on my HP Photosmart C7280 all-in-one?

Hopefully, this link will take you to the proper troubleshooting page.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c03081973&lc=en&product=3204785&tmp_track_link=ot_search#N213

You'll click on the third plus sign on the page (+) because your message DOES include the words "ink system failure."

From there, you'll choose, by looking at the pictures, whether your printer has a removable print head.

You'll click on the appropriate answer -- yes it does, or no it doesn't,

Then, you'll identify which print cartridges your system uses, and THAT will take you to the proper troubleshooting steps for your printer's specific configuration.

The fix may be something you've already tried -- turning off the printer and unplugging it (but did you unplug it from BOTH the unit AND the wall, and then did you wait at least 15 seconds?), or the fix may be to service the printer.

Good luck! :)

HP Photosmart B210a error message

Simple. Remove the ink and printhead. You can remove printhead by pulling gray latch up and sliding printhead up and out. Clean printhead gunk off using warm running water. Remove any ink gunk on the right side of printer if you see any. Turn printer off and on. See if problem went away. If it did, try putting the cleaned printhead inside printer again. If problem comes back, seems like the issue is with a bad printhead. Below are video instructions on cleaning head manually. The printheads are not same. B210 printhead is not the same with HP 6500, but instructions are same.

Photosmart 7510 cq877a issue is with the ink cartridge. Spoke with hp and said its a hardware problem. Any way to fix it?

Regarding the Photosmart 7500 printer issue (i.e. HP 564 cartridge errors, or similar) which is preventing printing to your printer....let's run thru a full checklist to ensure you cover all variables which could be causing the issue:

CAUTION: the use of compatible/clone cartridges (i.e. sold thru the internet from China) are known to be problematic and may cause printer errors and permanent PRINTHEAD damage since many have incompatible ink formulations (see Buyers Laboratory, BLI, Printer Test Report dated Jan 2014). Original/genuine ink cartridges is only suggested!

1) For refilled or remanufactured ink cartridges which do not have a new chip installed, if you received an "Unauthorized ink", "non-HP ink", "counterfeit ink" or similar message, you can simply ignore/dismiss these messages by pressing 'OK' once for each cartridge, so that the printer resumes its normal operation. If you do not have the full printer driver version installed it is possible that you may not be able to see the cartridge error bypass option - you may need to install the complete printer driver version for your computer's operating system. Receiving these kinds of ongoing alert messages is COMPLETELY NORMAL when using refilled ink cartridges. Refer to NOTE 2 below for more information. Refilling the ink cartridges does not include reprogramming of the ink cartridges, so this will not be a factor: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1407

2) Remove ink cartridge and inspect cartridge's smart chip surface (i.e. gold contacts) - check for scratches or ink residue. See pictures of cartridge chips at following link for reference (see 'Abnormal Cartridge Errors'): http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1925
- Replace cartridge if suspected damaged.

3) Perform Tap 41 PRINTHEAD Health Diagnostics Test (menu access varies by printer model, refer to HP printer diagnostics document, page 45, to view normal display messages, http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1813 )

1. Turn ON the printer.
2. Press and Hold the "Print Photos" & "Red Eye Removal" buttons.
3. Release both buttons - screen should display "Enter Special Key Combo"
4. Press and release in sequence the "Red Eye Removal", "Print Photos", and then "Red Eye Removal"
5. Scroll through the menu by pressing the right arrow button until the display says 'Special Reports'.
6. Select Ok, then press the arrow button until the 'print-mech button tap' menu is displayed.
7. Select Ok (Code = 0 will be displayed); click and hold Right Arrow until 'code = 41' is displayed.
8. Select Ok. The test page prints. If not, repeat steps 2-7 and enter 'code = 43', select Ok.
9. Check the 4th line at the top of the printed report; an electrically good/stable PRINTHEAD 'Pen Status' will state "Pen Status: Pen OK".........if any other message is displayed then the PRINTHEAD may have failed and may need to be replaced (as available). It is suggested to perform the 'Printer Reset' procedure below to rule out printer firmware related problem.
a. If Step 2. does not allow service menu access, then press the 'Return' and 'Home' keys simultaneously so the Engineering Menu is displayed [or depress the 'Return' button four (4) times]
b. Select Service Menu. Use arrow keys to advance to the Special Reports Menu. Select OK. Perform steps 6-9.

NOTE: The Tap 10 extended self-test print may also be initiated via 'code = 10' (use to verify ink nozzle/jetting performance for each color).

* Failure of the PRINTHEAD has nothing to do with refilled ink cartridges; the PRINTHEAD assembly is a separate electronic unit in which the cartridges plug into and feed ink into. Refer to NOTE below.

4.a.) It is possible that your ink cartridge may have been manufactured before Sept 2010 and is now incompatible with the newer line of HP Photosmart and Deskjet printer models. If this is the case then you will need to obtain a new ink cartridge manufactured after September 2010 (all cartridges at retail should now be >July 2012). Inspect cartridge bottom for 'date stamp' - see picture at the following link: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1925

4.b.) Replace ink cartridge with a new HP original ink cartridge to completely rule out the ink cartridge as the cause of failure.

5) To rule out printer/cartridge connectivity (assembly interface/connection) issues please ensure you have followed all steps on the Inkjet411 support page - this includes PRINTHEAD removal and thorough cleaning of the electrical surfaces on the PRINTHEAD and on the CARRIAGE ASSEMBLY: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1451

a. Remove all 4/5 ink cartridges, then remove the internal PRINTHEAD and thoroughly clean rear electrical contacts and carriage electrical contacts. Inspect ink foam ports to see if they are 'wet with ink'...this will confirm whether ink is being pulled into the PRINTHEAD or not. If the ink foam ports are completely dry (no significant amount of ink present when blotted with a paper towel, etc.), then the PRINTHEAD is likely considered too dry to support proper ink flow and subsequent printing operations. Refer to PRINTHEAD removal process at HP.com (link down below) or at the following Inkjet411 link to provide general guidance: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1451

6) If after thorough electrical contact cleaning the problem persists, you may need to replace the PRINTHEAD ASSEMBLY (i.e. get from HP or Amazon), however, as a last ditch effort, you might want to perform a hot water flush on the PRINTHEAD: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=2412

a. Remove all ink cartridges from the printer.
b. Remove the printhead - in most cases you will need to pull up on the lever at right side of carriage assembly to unlock the printhead. Lift printhead straight up to remove.
c. Over a sink, run warm tap water directly into the 4 (or 5) ink ports for approximately 2 minutes - this will effectively saturate the foam ports and blow ink out/thru the nozzle plate bottom.
d. Using a lint-free towel, remove water from rear/bottom electrical contacts. Ensure printhead electrical contacts and exposed surfaces are fully dry.
e. Install the printhead into the printer. You may observe a "Replace Printhead message" so you will need to cycle printer power by turning printer off and then on to clear the error.
f. Install ink cartridges and retest printer. You should observe a New PRINTHEAD alert message followed by an approx. 4-minute preparation countdown prompt.
g. If permissible, activate the 'Clean Printhead'. This can be done from the printer's control panel or software printer driver (for example, by selecting 'Tools' - 'Clean Printhead', or similar).
h. If you have reached this point of the troubleshooting and all the previous troubleshooting steps did not work, then the printhead is likely damaged or at end of life* and may need to be replaced.

NOTE: On some HP printer models it may be difficult to remove the PRINTHEAD assembly, consult your User's Guide for specific instructions.

7) If this does not remedy the problem, then you may have a defective PRINTHEAD in the printer (worst case scenario), unrelated to the refilled cartridges.

8) On the other hand, if you observe missing colors or poor image quality then air may have been accidentally ingested into the ink lines between the cartridge(s) and PRINTHEAD. To recover from this problem, you will have to run the "Clean Printhead" procedure 1-2 times to recover the ink system, or perform a hot water flush of the PRINTHEAD assembly (takes about 10 minutes). Watch the video on our support page which describes some of the common issues you may encounter. This type of problem is common and completely recoverable.

Blue ink won't print

The cyan print head nozzles maybe blocked.
Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent ink drying out and blocking the print head nozzles.
If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages, then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive.
It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer than replace the print head.

Response by Ezrahite did not fit the printer but, rather, describe earlier HP printers with ink cartridges fitted on a carriage and movable. the HP C7280 has six fixed ink cartridges - immovable and not on...

ink system failure is pertaining to the printhead,it maybe clogged or already damaged ,usually printhead has life shelf,it can print up to 11000 copie after that symptom will show... you have to replace it it serves as a pen it is the one that submits ink to the paper ...also try to do power reset, turn off printer, unplug power cable at the back, unplug cable in the outlet wait 30 secs plug it back in then power on... you may call hp 18004746836 to order new printhead

Ink system failure, everything was fine, i put new ink in just like i have many times before and now it won't print anything, it keeps telling me ink system failure on the monitor

This error usually means you are at the end of the life on the printhead or the printhead assembly has a defect causing it to stop working. You can try removing all of the cartridges with the machine on. once they have all been removed unplug the power cord from the socket (be sure printer is still on!) wait about 30sec-1min. then plug back in. the display will Read out of ink install and an icon for each missing color. Reinstall all cartridges and close cover. it will take a minute or 2 for it to cycle and prime the ink. The display should read ink Sysytem Failure, power down machine. Press Power button to shut down, leave for another 30sec. and then turn back on. If the error displays again you will have to contact HP for in warranty service or replacement options. Note: if you are out of Warranty it is a good idea to shop for a new printer via Costco, Walmart, or an Office Supply Store, it will save you $$$
(a friend had this issue and they were going to sell her a new printer for $30 more than staples plus shipping!)
