I put new batteries in my Logitech M205 wireless mouse and the red light on top flashes 5 times, and the mouse doesn't work. I've used 5 different brand new batteries and the same thing happens.

If your unit is a wireless keyboard only, then there is a button on the bottom of the keyboard and another on the receiver that is plugged into the usb port of the computer. In order to calibrate the system when it looses its signal, you have to press and hold both buttons down at the same time for 30 to 45 seconds. That means press the button the receiver and the button on the bottom of the keyboard at the same time and hold them down for 30 to 45 seconds. This will revive the signal and bring it back to working condition.
If your unit is a wireless mouse and wireless keyboard then there are probably 3 buttons involved that need to be pressed and held for 30 to 45 seconds at the same time. One button on the mouse, one on the keyboard and the last on the receiver.
If you press and hold the buttons down as explained above, it will correct the problem.
When you put in the new batteries, you may need to press the "Sync" button on the wireless receiver. If it does not have one, I suggest contacting Logitech to help resolve the issue.
The flashing light could be a reflection from the LED and mirror or laser on the bottom of the mouse. I had this similar problem and it drove me nuts until I happened to hold it up to a mirror and noticed the flashing was in sync bot top and bottom of the mouse.
It depends on the mouse. Sometimes the red light flashes to signify the processing of a command. If it is continually flashing, then you may want to replace the battery.
Now what you have to do is look for a reset button on your mouse and your wireless mouse signal receiver. When the receiver and mouse both are on press the reset button on both of them one by one. This should solve the problem.
A friend of mine brought me this problem with exactly the same problem. here is what I found. The small notch in usb device socket under the mouse was malfunctioning. If you press this notch you will find the mouse red light blink. If you further try pressing this notch at some point the mouse red light comes on constantly. Thats it, hold it there and try to connect first by pressing the usb device connect switch and then the mouse connect switch. The moment the connection is made the usb device stops blinking and the red light on the mouse starts blinking. Wow, it works now. Some one might just open the mouse and fix this microswtich for a permanent solution.
