Set would seem to be either in PIP (picture in picture multiple mode) or the black box might be the TEXT feature which is found in the closed caption menu.
If you mean you have a black square in the top right hand of your picture, it sounds like the Picture in Picture feature is turned on and there is no signal to the tuner, which will show as a black square somewhere on the screen.
Open the menu and check the setting for the picture in picture feature. This could solve the problem.
Look on your remote for a function called POP or PIP, if you do then that must be turned off. It sounds like you do have it. If you don't see it then go into your menu under features or under that order, and look for the Picture in Picture feature. each manufacturer calls it something different.
Go into the TVs menu and look for the closed captioning menu. Someone has inadvertantly selected the "teletext" mode. Since no broadcaster s currently using this feature, when a false signal is encountered by the TV, it throws up the black box that would contain the text data. Turn off the text function and enjoy more of the picture!
Check the closed caption feature in the menu setup. Consult the instruction manual about closed caption, or call the manufacture tech support.
What is probably activated is the closed caption bulletin board feature, and the station you are tuned to has the board up but with nothing on it. They use these to put text messages mainly for programming schedules and notifications.
I have a Sharp Tv that had the same problem with a large brownish or black square right in the middle of the screen. It only left about an inch around the edges that you
could see the picture moving in behind the big black block or square.I have DISH sat-elite and the book recomending that I check and see if the "caption settings" were on
or off. They were on. I turned the caption settings off and the large square diappeared.
