Iphone keeps telling me my SIM card is not recognised. I take it out and then put it back in. It gets recognised initially, but sooner or later (1 min - 1 hour) it will go back to not being recognised....

Try This:
1. Remove Sim Card
2. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until Apple logo appears
3. Replace Sim Card
4. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until normal phone screen appears.

Also, Try this:
1.) Shut down the iPhone 3G.
2.) Start up iTunes
3.) Hold down HOME button on the iPhone 3G
4.) While keeping the HOME button depressed, plug in the Sync cable
5.) A message will pop up to ask if you want to reset.
6.) Just click YES and the reset process should start.

I used my iphone in australia then moved to new

I fear you cannot do that, without an actual "Jail Broken" iPhone.and or a Telecom NZ suitable phone.

My iphone got saturated in the washing machine. How do I open it to remove the sim card?

The sim card is located at the top of the iPhone at the middle, when you bought the iPhone it should have come with a special metal pick type object that helps remove the sim card. A paper clip should work just as well..

Sim card causes iPhone to overheat and drains the battery.

I've tried to lock the iPhone to my tele provider in stead of letting it search for available networks (the automatic option in settings). Seems to work. But I will also get a new sim card. Strange problem though...

Cannot import contact from sim card to iphone 3G

Turn off the iPhone before inserting the sim, insert sim, turn on, import contacts. If you put the sim in the phone without restarting it for some reason it doesn't get all the contacts sometimes.

No SIM card installed

I too have had the "no sim card installed message. What has always worked for me is to go into settings and put the phone into airplane mode for about ten seconds and then switch back to regular mode which causes the phone to reconnect to the ATT network. The sim message goes away. This is also a good fix for when your phone isn't connecting to 3G or showing an "E" instead of 3G.
