Would folling this lead to a full hard drive format or just unbricking a drive like people sat it does??
Also any other ways that might help would be great to know,
heres what i'm talking about!
"Fixing The Drive
NOTE: Commands for you to type are in red boldface. Pay attention to upper & lower case - it is important.
Turn on power to the RS232-to-TTL adapter and the hard drive.
After a few seconds, Press CTRL+z. You should then see a prompt like this:
F3 T>
If not, swap TX & RX wires.
Access Level 2 (type /2):
F3 T>/2 (enter)
F3 2>
Then spin down the (disconnected) motor:
F3 2>Z (enter)
Spin Down Complete
Elapsed Time 0.147 msecs
F3 2>
Very carefully, remove the cardstock that you placed between the PCB and the drive head contacts. Carefully replace and tighten the 3 loose screws. I suggest using a small piece of masking tape to help you hold the screws while you put them back in place.
Then start the motor:
F3 2>U (enter)
Spin Up Complete
Elapsed Time 7.093 secs
F3 2>
Next go to Level 1 (type /1):
F3 2>/1 (enter)
And do a S.M.A.R.T. erase (create S.M.A.R.T. sector):
F3 1>N1 (enter)
Cycle power to the drive, then do partition regeneration:
F3 T>m0,2,2,0,0,0,0,22 (enter)
After 15-30 seconds, you should see something like:
Max Wr Retries = 00, Max Rd Retries = 00, Max ECC T-Level = 14, Max Certify Rewrite Retries = 00C8
User Partition Format 10% complete, Zone 00, Pass 00, LBA 00004339, ErrCode 00000080, Elapsed Time 0 mins 05 secs
User Partition Format Successful - Elapsed Time 0 mins 05 secs
Do not turn off drive until you see this message.
Once seen, drive can be turned off.
Power down everything, place drive back into your computer, and confirm that it's working."
Thanks.

Yes, get the free version of this data recovery software from

Another one you can try if above fails:

HTH,

SOURCE: my external hard drive says you need to format the disk befor you
Download the BartPE bootable iso and burn it on to a CD:
http://www.download.com/BartPE-Bootable-Live-Windows-CD-DVD/3000-2094_4-10611131.html
It has some nice data recovery softwares. Boot using the CD and run the data recovery software(s) and you should mostly be able to get your data back - save it to your other hard disk.
You can also get some free software data recovery tools from:

You won't lose your data,

SOURCE: External Hard Drive I/O Error
Somehow i tried to format and it was formatted. took pretty long time as 1 terabyte. i thought all is ok as the drive was accessible. Just to double check, i scanned the drive thorugh the seagate manager and it got stuck on 10% for few seconds and then said that the hard disk is faulty and should be immediately returned if under warranty. and to confirm it also gave me read errors http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/05/15/how-to-tell-hard-drive-physical-damage/
so i'm giving it to seagate service centre as it probably has physical faults, bad sectors. and someone told me that 1TB hard drives are not stable.

This is one of the mean tricks that the industry uses to discourage people from opening things and then totally ruining them.
What about getting yourself a 5-star-shaped screwdriver? Ask your hardware store guy.
Too expensive? Well - I have a lot of different simple slotted screwdrivers. Normally I find one that fits into 2 corners of these "miracle screws". If you don't have fitting one use a cheap one that is slightly too large to fit and grind it down just to size.
The same trick works with the other kind of "discouragement screws" that have ALMOST a normal slot --- but there's an elevation in the middle of it. A slot screwdriver with a ground-in **** in the middle (Dremel tools work fine) does the trick.

I believe Seagate has a 5yr warranty with this drive. Why not have Seagate honor the warranty and have them repair or replace the drive?
