Formatted and installed a WD 60gb hd as slave and is not detected

I formatted and installed a WD 60gb harddrive on my pc and when I go to 'My Computer' its not being recognized, I can see the C drive is there.

1) The BIOS recognize the slave drive.
2) its visible in Device Manager.
3) Device Manager> properties> device usage Enable.
4) its not in Disk Management.

I don't know what else to do.. I need help.

I first installed the second drive and it used to work, it happened after i formatted its old data and files than drive disappeared from 'My Computer' .

Now thats my problem, I dont know how to format to NTFS or FAT32. Can you show me how because I dont know where to find it or what to do.

    I'll appreciate your help.

When I go to "My Computer" the slave(secondary)drive is not present, is only the main "C" drive thats there.

When I boot up the computer than go to the BIOS I see that the WD 60gb harddrive is there.

Also is listed in "Device Manager"

i have a third party software installed on my computer the reads every device thats intalled on my pc, including specifications of every device and also the slave drive appears there and in good condition.

I was told to go to "Disk Management" to rename the Drive with a new letter, But I cant because is not there either.

All I can think of is Windows Xp not recognizing the new harddrive after wiping out the drive clean.

Thanks for your attention in helping me.

Did you format this drive to NTFS or FAT32. It may not rcognise it as a slave drive on a format other than NTFS

In "My Comoputer", right click on the drive you wish to format and select 'format'. You will see the options for the formatting procedure. Select NTFS and, select 'Qick format', then click ok. Remember all data on the drive will be lost.

Aha! XP, doesn't have drivers for SATA drives. If your WD 60gb is a SATA drive, you will need to download and install sata drivers.

I have a WD media player and my HD crashed recently. I installed a new one but i now get an error message saying that my HD is not detected yet it works fine on the PC - please assist.

If it works OK on you PC and not in the WD, it suggests to me that you have the disk incorrectly formatted. Most media players use a Linux format not a windows format (fat or ntfs). Try deleting the partition in the PC and then format it with the WD. I presume that you replaced it with the same size disk as many of them will not use anything larger than the original size.

I Transferred a hd into this pc from another pc. This hd is ntfs format. The second hd in this pc is the fat format. In explorer it shows the second hd as the d drive. When i click on it it says this hd is...

First of all, I hope the harddisk which has the operating system on it, and which the system is booting from is NTFS formatted. Try and crosscheck this first. Then after doing this, try and assign a new drive letter to the harddrive that is showing error from the Systems Management Page.
This is how you do that : Right-Click on My Computer Icon, Go to Manage, Click on Disk Management, Then when you get to this place, You should see ALL the HardDrives installed on your system including the one singing for "format me"...lol.
Then locate and right-click on the harddrive, and select "Change Drive letter and Paths", and select any new, unique letter for your HDDrive. then click on OK.
Hope this helps.
Goodluck.

Have maxtor 40gb hd want to add 2nd WD hd in DEll dim8200

(if both drives on the same cable):
Your boot drive goes at the end of the primary data cable.
Your second drive goes on the middle connection of the same cable.
The red stripe on the data cable needs to be closest to the power connection (red stripe to pin 1).
The jumper on the boot drive set to master.
The jumper on the second drive set to slave.
Look in the BIOS to make sure it sees both harddrives.
Boot the system.. it will need to be partitioned and formatted if not already..
Regards..

I added an SATA HD to a system whose C and D drives are a WD 400GB PATA HD. The Hitachi 750GB drive has no jumpers for master/slave. After boot-up the system sees it but assigns no E or other letter...

  • Right Click [My Computer] and click Manage
  • Click Disk Management on the left side
  • Inspect the drives listed. The new drive may need to be formatted for the operating system to recognize it and assign it a letter.
  • To format the drive, right click the drive with no letter, and click Format. Choose your format (Preferred NTFS), and quick format the drive so that windows recognizes it.

How to detect the hardrive?

Hi,

setup the first drive as slave ( sometimes No Jumper ) then the furthest away drive as Master.
If this fails, and you have 2 IDE Slots on the motherboard. ( Primary/Secondary ) Put 1 drive on primary as Slave. And DVD Rom As Master ( same Cable ) Then put second drive On Secondary IDE Slot. ( Set As Master Or Slave )
If none of these solutions Work For you, check to see if Both Channels are activated in the Bios.

Thankyou For Using Fixya.

I have used norton ghost to do just what you're wanting to do.
1)run ghost on a desktop pc,hook your 60gb hd to your pc as a "slave"(using adapter).
2)"clone",or"create image"of the hd to a folder (on desktop)
3)swap hd's(on desktop)
4)format new(250gb)drive as "ntfs"
5)open ghost,and do a "restore"-of the saved image folder-TO new hd,re-install new 250gig in laptop.
///YOURE done!!!
-now you will have a back-up(old hd,AND image file folder.

Formatting my WD external hardrive

Hi, In computer terms, formatting a hardrive is the process of preparing/setting the different areas (for read/write) of the harddrive and keeping a list of the addresses. This way the computer would know what data went with what and to where in the HD. Most if not all new HDs are not formatted (prepared) for computer use but are detectable by the PC. Formatting not only makes the HD recognizable, it is now usable. By formatting, the PC also erases any and all references to the existing data on the HD. After being erased and prepared, it also checked for any possible errors. Hope this be of some idea/help. Good luck and kind regards.
