It's the aperture lever that has to be replaced and NIKON will do it at no cost to you.I just got mine back from NIKON's Melville Repair Center. They are great because they have backed their product and their service and people who work their are excellent!Kudos to NIKON!!!!
Setting it to portrait mode should do it. Hold down the shutter button, it should be working.
I'm not overly familiar with nikons, but otherwise it'll be in a menu mode if you switch it to a more manual setting. Probably under shooting mode. Set it to continuous shoot
Have you checked the flash mode?
I have no problems with the combination D300 SB-800.
I assume you don't have a picture if the flash goes off before the shutter open(?)
If you do check the menu e2 Flash shutter speed you can set it at a few seconds in spite of the fact that the flash sync (e1) is something reasonable like 1/250
The flash shutter speed is set to 1/60 in my camera...
Only reason the lens will not auto focus when you depress the shutter half way is due to either lens AF switch is set to Manual OR camera body's focus system is on M. There is 3 way toggle switch below the synch port around the lens mount. It should be set to C or S in order for auto focus to work. If all the settings are correct and even "AF-ON", next to rear dial doesn't activate auto focus then the issue maybe in the setting or the body itself. As for the buffer reading r27, I think mine displays r## regardless of burst/continuous mode.
