Re: Brother HL 2140 does not pick up paper from tray
Make sure your pickup roller clean.
If it's clean and still jams the problem is inside.
Remove left cover (where the USB connection is located);
Remove big black gear with a spring on it (you may need to unscrew the PCB that partially covers it);
There is a clutch that sticks to the rubber pad behind this gear. You may put a piece of scotch tape towards to a rubber pad, so the plastic from clutch mechanism would'n stick anymore. http://www.phillycopiers.com/fix/hl-2040-2070-fix.jpg

Make sure paper is lifted. After jam occurred remove the paper tray, press Go button and watch on the white gear located on the inner left side. If it spins the paper lifts. Clean you printer with an air blower properly because it seems that there is an peice of paper stuck between the trays or just open all the trays and bring them out and clean tem and check for the paper stuck.
If that does not work then just update the drivers or if firmware of the printer is available then download that and update it.
The Brother HL-2140 does not include duplex printing. The only option for double sided printing with this model is to print odd numbered pages, then manually replace the paper into the tray and print the even numbered pages in a second set.
Open the front door, remove the cartridge/drum...slowly slight the paper out. if it jams at the back ...do the same but rotate the fuser gear..if it jams on the tray not pull as it would cause the paper to break and sensors might get dmaged,
It is most likely that your Laser Unit is failing. It could also be dirt on the electrodes of the drum unit and machine body or the ground terminal on the paper tray is bent. It is best that you visit you local Brother Authorized Service Center for additional help.

For a possible fix to the Brother HL-2140 squeal/squeak/noise problem open the printer at the other side from the paper tray and toner cartridge door. You should see a little black roller rod along with some white wheels.
The noise may be coming from the contact between the wheels/rollers which pull paper toward the output tray on top after it has been printed.
Check and clean/wipe the wheels and black rod, especially in the center area. Hopefully the noise will now be reduced/eliminated.
