Is your memory card write protected, SD cards have a small notch on the left hand side of the card which you can slide up or down to select/deselect protection.

Most cameras also have a photo protection facility in the menu to stop you over writing pictures you've decided to protect.

This can be switched on or off via the camera menu under card settings.

Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Got an error message on screen got an xd551 and it keeps saying protection on screen

Protection mode happens when a problem is detected in the final stage of the amplifier. The unit shuts down to prevent further damage. Usually this is because one or more of the output transistors has failed. The typical repair cost will be between $20-$40 for parts plus the local labor rate.

"Write Protect"?!

It's the memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.
