Windows xp pro logon error message "unable to log you on because your account has been locked out"

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2010

OK, this is a personal computer that at one time (approx 1.5 yrs ago) was given a few User Accounts by one of my clients so that I could access the internet when I was onsite at their office. This problem started earlier this morning so I called my client and asked to speak with the IT Manager who set up the accounts and Administrator password for my laptop that it having the login problem. I was told that he doesn't work there any more and they didn't know how to get in touch with him.

So, I have a few accounts and an Admin password that will not work. Please advise.

Is there a way around the Admin password?

Hey!
If your computer is a part of a business network, you should contact the network administrator so he/she would setup or reconfigure your user account correctly.

If it's a home computer, you'll have to log on as Administrator to unlock your account. To do so:

  1. Click Start -> Log off (user name).
  2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice.
  3. Type Administrator in the user name and fill in the Administrator account's password. Leave blank if there isn't any.
  4. Once logged in, Click Start -> Run...
  5. Type in: LUSRMGR.MSC and click OK.
  6. Double-click on Users folder.
  7. Double-click on your locked user account.
  8. Uncheck "Account is disabled" and click OK.
  9. Close "Local Users and Groups" window.
  10. Click Start -> Log off Administrator.
  11. Login to your user account!
Note: If you don't have access to the Administrator account (because you don't have the password), please do tell and I'll give you the instructions on how to reset it.

GOOD LUCK!
Pelu.

IMPORTANT NOTE: After step 1 and 10 - Click Log Off (instead of Switch User)!

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2010

Well, actually I've just found out that the program I once used to reset an Administrator password, can also save you the other steps and unlock YOUR account!

Download Offline NT Password & Registry Editor from here and burn it on a CD using Nero - or your favorite burning software.
I'm afraid I can't remember by heart all the steps, so please read the instructions over here

    Good luck again.

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2010

BTW, if any other user account on your computer has administrative privileges, you can skip resetting the Administrator's password and use that user account instead!

  • Anonymous Apr 07, 2010

    Hi again!
I had to write the instructions for "Offline NT Password & Registry Editor" to other person, so I'll give them to you as well:

Download Offline NT Password & Registry Editor and burn
it to a CD. I guess you know how to burn it, but if not- read "How to
make the CD" section in here.

Restart your computer, enter the BIOS and set it to
boot up from the CD drive. Again, I assume you know how to do this - if
        not - consult me!

Boot up from the CD and press enter on the first
        screen.

Wait for it to load, then select the partition that
contains your Windows system (usually 1), then press Enter.

On the next screen accept all defaults, then choose 1
        (Password reset) and press Enter.

Next, press 1 again (Edit user data and passwords), and
        press Enter.

You'll then get a list with all the user accounts
configured on your computer. Type in the account name of which you want
to reset the password. Press Enter.

Select 1 (Clear (blank) user password) and press Enter.

Once the password is cleared, press ! (exclamation mark
-> Shift 1), then press Enter.

        Press q, then Enter.

        Press y, then Enter.

Press n (if asked for new run).

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to make a restart once the program's
        done running. (By the way, If you get a message: "sh: can't access tty;
job control turned off" - you can safely IGNORE it! It has nothing to
        do with the password resetting!)

OPTIONAL: Enter the BIOS again and tell it to boot from
the hard disk drive, rather than the CD drive. Save and exit.

        Boot to Windows.

Log on to your account. Leave the password field blank!
    DONE!

    For
more information and more detailed step by step walk-through guide,
    look here.

    Best regards,
    Pelu.

Forgot user account psswords

If you have forgotten your password, if you have another user account with
administrative privileges you can log into that account and change your
original user account's password from the User Accounts applet in Control
Panel. If you don't have another account like this set up or don't have the
password to it, you'll need to log into the built-in Administrator account.
In XP Home, boot the computer into Safe Mode. Do this by repeatedly tapping
the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This will get you to the right
menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not work here. Once
in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden Administrator account. The
default password is a blank.

In XP Pro, you do not need to go into Safe Mode. At the Welcome Screen, do
Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get the classic Windows logon box. Type in
"Administrator" and whatever password you assigned when you set up Windows.

To change the built-in Administrator account in XP Pro if you can log into
another account with administrative privileges reset the password in the
Local Users and Groups snap-in in Microsoft Management Console (MMC):

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type "mmc" (without the quotation marks), and then click
OK to start MMC.
3. Start the Local Users and Groups snap-in.
4. Under Console Root, expand "Local Users and Groups", and then click
Users.
5. In the right pane, right-click Administrator, and then click Set
Password.
6. Click Proceed in the message box that appears.
7. Type and confirm the new password in the appropriate boxes, and then
click OK.

If you reset the built-in Administrator account's password in Home or have
Pro and don't remember the password, use NTpasswd to change the built-in
Administrator account's password to a blank.

How do you bypass the admin password on Windows XP

Method one: Log into an alternate account
Often many users will leave the administrator account alone and/or have other accounts with administrator rights. If you're not logging into the computer as administrator or have other accounts follow the below steps to reset your other accounts password.

1 Reboot the computer into Safe Mode. Additional information about getting into Safe
2 When logging into Safe Mode you should be prompted with an option to what account you wish to use. Select the Administrator account. If prompted for a password try simply pressing Enter on the keyboard for no password. If this does not work, try other passwords you may have used. If you're unable to log into the Administrator account skip to the next suggestion.
3 Once you've logged into the Administrator account open Control Panel and User Accounts.
4 In User Accounts select the account you wish to change the password for, click change password and then enter the new password or click remove the password to remove the password from the account.

Method Two: Using the forgotten password diskette
If you have forgotten your Windows XP password, however have created a forgotten password diskette earlier to use the diskette follow the below steps.
1 At the Windows XP login prompt when the password is entered incorrectly click the reset button in the login failed window.
2 Insert the password reset diskette into the computer and click Next.
3 If the correct diskette Windows XP will open a window prompting for the new password you wish to use. .

Method Three: Use a third party software.
Windows Password Key 8.0 is considered as the best tool to reset local administrator and user passwords on any Windows system.
Download the utility and install it then burn the software to a CD/USB drive, then insert the newly created CD/USB drive to your locked pc and reboot your computer, then press "F2" to enter your BIOS setup, following the instruction to reset your lost windows password.

See,there are many ways to help you remove windows logon password,so you don't need to worry about when you heve forgotten windows password

How do I logon as administer

Hi,

The built-in Administrator account is hidden from Welcome Screen when a user account with Administrator privileges exists and enabled. In Windows XP Home Edition, you can login as built-in Administrator in Safe Mode only. For XP Professional, press CTRL + ALT + DEL twice at the Welcome Screen and input your Administrator password in the classic logon window that appears.
To have the Administrator account displayed in the Welcome Screen, try one of these methods:
Method 1: Using TweakUI Power Toy for Windows XP Download TweakUI from here: v2.00 for Windows XP | v2.10 for XP SP1 and above
Open TweakUI and click "Logon" option in the left pane. Put a checkmark against the option "Show Administrator on Welcome Screen". Click OK to close TweakUI. Logoff and see if Welcome Screen lists Administrator login. Changes are immediate and you can use the Winkey + L to switch back to Welcome Screen to see Administrator account is listed.
Use this procedure to hide/unhide any user account from the Welcome Screen. Please remember, you can still login to a hidden account using CTRL+ALT+DEL classic logon method, but cannot Fast User Switch to a hidden user account.
Method 2 - Manual registry edit
  • Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
  • Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ SpecialAccounts \ UserList
  • Use the File, Export option to backup the key
  • Create a new DWORD Value named Administrator
  • Double-click Administrator, and set 1 as its data
  • Exit the Registry Editor.
For Windows XP Home Edition While you can configure Windows XP Home Edition to show Administrator account in the Welcome Screen, you cannot login as Administrator in Normal mode. Visit the following link for more information:
Error Message: Unable to Log You on Because of an Account Restriction

Please post your feedback and Vote if the problem resolved as per your satisfaction.

I have problem when i start my pc a error message appeared rcint failure string table id not found 42 at line 462

This problem usually occur due to soft booting the machine (reset) and then it could not restart. Usually after the xp logo screen u can only got the parser message: string table not found '42' at line 462. (which is a registery sincronization error (r,sint)). Click the ok button many times and your machine will boot up. Then go to control panel, user accounts, create new account. soft boot your machine again log onto new account and delete all files found in file search with stylexp and tgtsoft in them. Tthen log off and restart and log on as usual user (p.s. administrater privalidges required on both) and delete the new logon account. Hope this will fix the problem, otherwise you have to format your hard disc and reinstall your OS.

Logon failed

The EXACT, letter for letter, error message is needed. Maybe the account is locked out, disabled, or non-existent. Maybe you need to reset the password with an administrator level account, or maybe your CAPS lock is on.
