I have HP c309a printer. My every day printing seems to be using the photo black cartridge instead of the 564XL which I believe is meant for everyday printing. How can I make 564XL the default cartridge for everyday printing? Thanks

replace the cartridge.

Do not open the HP 564XL cartridge until you are ready to use it
Do not touch the electrical contacts of the cartridge
To obtain best print reliability store the box with the bottom facing down
Use the HP 564XL ink up within 6 months after opening to obtain the best print quality
Refer to your users manual provided with your printer for information on how to open and install the cartridge
Store out of direct light, in a stable environment. Large temperature changes may affect the cartridge

I used to have one of these printers.

1. Check the ink levels.
2. Try printing on DVD.

The C309 has a black photo cartridge.

Text prints from the regular black cartridge and pictures print from the photo black cartridge.

THe best way to tell if by checking first the ink levels and replace cartridge if necessary.

One thing you can do to check if the printer is printing is by adjusting on the Printer Setttings and printing on one color.

To do this you need to choose the color from a circular palette .

Another way is to use Word or any other processor and change the font color to blue and print it.

This printer has one Photo Black Cartridge for printing photos and Black Cartridge for regular printing of documents.

it should take the XL if you having issues inserting it give HP a call they will assist you

Are you using genuine HP cartridges?
According to HP, the two cartridges for your printer are the 564 and the 564XL. Either cartridge will work.
HP does not offer another size.

Take the black one out that's in there now and see what the Part # is... then do a search for it.

'58' should only be used with 'photo' paper, '57' is for everyday use.

The photo cartridge replaces the black cartridge. It is used along with the color cartridge to provide better photo's.

The photo cartridge contains photo black, light cyan and light magenta while the color cartridge provides cyan, magenta and yellow. Both photo and color cartridges need to be installed and working for proper photo printing.
