TI-83 Plus silver edition won't turn on.

My daughter's calculator is not turning on. The message "low battery please replace" did appear, but we didn't replace the batteries until maybe a month later. We've changed the AAA batteries and the backup Lithium battery and still the calculator won't respond. Is there anyway to fix this problem? Thanks!

    won't come with new batteries

  • pip247 Apr 01, 2008

My TI-83 Plus Silver Edition wouldn't turn on properly either. The batteries are good. I got a black screen out of the blue for the first time last week. Actually it wasn't totally black. It was mottled. And when I held it at an angle I could actually see some of the menu items when I pressed "2nd +" except there was also gobbledygook, pixel art and the menu seemed to be all mixed up. So I tried to reset it following some advice I saw on a website to no avail. What I did to it was take out the batteries, including the Lithium, let it sit overnight, then put the batteries back in while holding down the clear key and then continuing to hold the CLEAR key when I pushed the ON key. For an hour or so I got nothing. Seemed like there just was no juice. And after a while I pressed ON again and it suddenly went back to the black screen or a rapidly flashing screen. BTW I also tried the reset procedure (taking out the batteries, waiting, and then putting back in the batteries,) with the DEL key held and then pushing the ON button. No better for me. But you may want to try this.

My experience indicates that the calculator needs to charge up to operate once you put in batteries. So you may just need to be patient after putting in batteries and come back and try to turn it on later. Of course make sure it's not the screen being too dim: use 2nd up-arrow repeatedly.

On the other hand, I wasn't successful in my attempts so maybe this is all a waste of time. Maybe these problems are beyond repair. But if there are ideas I'd like to know!

The screen may be at the lowest dim setting, try turning it on, then pressing the 2nd key and then hold the up key and see if anything appears, if not let me know and I will try to figure out something else, I own a 83, 84, and 89 so it shouldn't be too hard to figure out

The calculator can work with just the AAA batteries. But, without the backup battery, you'll lose all the contents of memory when the AAAs die. The backup battery is intended to keep the contents refreshed while you replace the AAAs.

How can i fix the message om the TI-83 RAM Cleared?

It is possible that the backup battery is depleted and cannot keep the RAM refreshed when the calculator is turned off. I suggest you change the backup battery immediately.

My ti 83 will turn on when i press the clear thing but when i try to put something in nothing happens

Hi imagenius1,

You need to free up some memory. Try clearing your RAM memory. Your calculator should operate properly afterward.

Press [2nd] [MEM] [7] [1] [2]

If the steps above did not reset the memory to your Ti 83 family calculator try the procedures below.

Please be prepared to re-install the calculator's OS if you run through this process.

If you have a straight Ti 83 without the Plus or, Silver Edition label goto (Procedure 2) below. If your Ti calculator is a Ti 83 Plus or better goto (Procedure 1).

(Procedure 1).

  1. Try a new set of AAA batteries.

  2. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [CLEAR] key. While holding [CLEAR], reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display the message "RAM Cleared". Release the [CLEAR] key and, then press [CLEAR] one more time to remove the message.

  1. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [DEL] key. While holding [DEL], reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display "Waiting...Please install calculator software now". Follow the instructions for the TI-83 family or TI-84 Plus family to reinstall the calculator operating system.

  2. Steps to re-installing the operating system:
~Connect the TI Connectivity cable between the PC and the calculator.
~Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OSDownloader
~Follow the on-screen directions to reinstall the calculator's OS. If you could not install the new OS on your calculator goto step 4.

  3. Remove all of the batteries including the round lithium battery for 5 minutes. After the 5 minute period, reinsert all of the batteries and turn the calculator on. Adjust the contrast if necessary.

  4. If the above process did not reset your calculator. Try re-doing (Procedure 1) and, extend the time in step 4, by 5 minutes to 10 minutes before you put all the batteries back in the calculator.

(Procedure 2).

For a straight Ti 83 without the Plus or, Silver Edition label try the procedure below.

  1. Try a new set of AAA batteries.

  2. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [ON] key for 20 seconds. Reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on.

My ti 83 calculator turns on but nothing shows

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen, especially when the batteries are changed, so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

TI-83 Plus Silver Edition problem

These instructions are from education.ti.org, and worked for me.

1) Take out one of the AAA batteries
2) Hold down the CLEAR button
3) Put the AAA battery back in while still holding down the CLEAR button
4) Let go of the CLEAR button and turn the calculator ON
5) Press CLEAR to get rid of the error message.

Then you should be good! All the applications on my calculator were still intact, so despite the error message, the RAM was never actually cleared.
