Sounds like your camera and your lens aren't communicating. Have you tried cleaning the contacts on the camera and the lens mount?

SOURCE: Canon 40D not firing

Try doing a reset in the camera tools somewhere, this fixed a similar problem I had.

SOURCE: My Nikon D40 will not focus when I have it on automatic.

First I would try removing the lens from the camera. Then re attach it and see what happens. Next I would manually focus the lens from one extreme to the other, see if you feel any resistance or binding in the focus. If all else fails call the lens manufacturer.

SOURCE: Automatic focus not working

The D40x only autofocuses with the latest AF-S (and old professional AF-I) lenses. Most traditional (screw-type) AF lenses from 1986 through today will not autofocus on the D40x. If your lens says "AF-S," you're fine.
Most lenses sold today for the D40x are AF-S, and so is the included 18-55mm kit lens. Many non-Nikon lenses from Tamron, Tokina, Quantaray, Sigma and anyone other than Nikon still won't autofocus on the D40x. Try before you buy, but honestly, there isn't much the included 18-55mm lens won't do.
Autofocus systems are fast, but not usually instantaneous. You have to hold the shutter down halfway as you compose the first shot so the AF system can focus and lock, and then the camera fires instantaneously when you press the shutter the rest of the way. See Preventing Shutter Delay for more.

Camera will not focus

There can be so many issues, but to make sure it has nothing to d with any setting, remove the battery and after you replaced it, set the camera to automatic (green camera logo on the main dial)
then try making a pictures as described in the manual:
position a subject to the middle of the frame, press the shutter release button halfway and wait till the subject in the focus area glows green. (I hope this time it works) then press the shutter complete. If it now works, perhaps it is clear where the camera setting was wrong? Be aware the camera needs a subject with enough contrast and enough light to focus correct.
You also could shoot by taping the part the camera should focus on, on the screen. And because yur camera has so many options to focus, i do advice you to look in the manual and check what modes the camera has. Perhaps in the future you can recognise how or on what the camera want to focus.
I hoop your camera does not have any defect.
success.

Nikon D300 - Auto focus point won't move. Autofocus doesn't work.

The lock that's around the 4-way button that moves the AF point will stop it from moving. The AF switch (says C,S,M) on the body below the lens release button gets knocked to manual and turns off the AF

Flash

if your setting is set on auto focus then it will automatically sense any presence of backdrop light, if the sensing device cannot see or seen a dark background then it will work automatically, not all condition will be met under some condition,

try focusing on a brighter image or with good light exposure, this might prevent the flash from flashing but will and should work in dark areas.

see your seting first
