Fan like whirring noise from rear underside of car

Check the level and cleanliness of the rear axle lubricant .

Sounds like you have a defective wheel bearing.

Check bearings.

I seen this before and is the upper rear axle support, or the engine support just open your hood and see if the motor move to much, or get on the back the car and look under to see it the axle move to much wile some one is shifting. MAKE SURE TO APPLY EMERGENCY BREAK

Axles usually make noise when any type of load is placed on them whether it be from turning or accelerating. I know that my daughters went bad just the other day. It was making a horrible clicking noise left rear.

Is it closer to the back of the vehicle or the front?Possibly the fuel pump. Try opening the gas tank and stick your ear close to the intake of the tank while someone turns the key.

More than likely it is a wheel bearing, while driving and no other cars around, swerve the car back and forth and listen for the noise to increase. Usually which ever way you turned and the noise became louder, that is the side the bad bearing is on. Then you have to determind front or rear. While being a Technician, I have the benefit of raising the car on a lift and listening to the wheel bearings with a stethescope while the wheels are spinning to determind the bad bearing.

if you are sure its right rear of car, jack up car so the right rear is off the gound, grasp the spring with you hand, and with your other hand, spin the wheel, if you feel any roughness , your wheel bearing is bad and will need replacement.

YES THE CV AXLES DO MAKE A SIMILAR NOISE WHEN GOING BAD BECAUSE THE CAGE THAT THE BALL-BEARINGS ARE IN VIBRATE AS THEY ROTATE. check your rear end and make sure it has plenty of gear oil..if full then there is friction in it somewhere and it is probly getting ready to go out.
