talk to your friend and ask if the phone was locked to a particular mobile network ?
If it is locked it would be easier to stay with that mobile network.
Once you know what network it is you can contact that network provider or find a reseller and purchase a sim card and mobile number. If you go to a dealer or reseller of the particular mobile network they might install the sim card and activate for you.
otherwise you might have to but the sim chip into the phone.
A user manual for the make and model number of the phone would instruct you how to do this although you might find a youtube video that might show you how to do this.
As it is straight talk that might be the mobile network to go for.

you need to contact straight talk's support and tell them your mobile number porting from verizon to straight talk has not been done properly and verizon is being contacted instead of straight talk phone. Verizon will have to release your #

Call the carrier and ask them for the code, I did and was given it no problem. AT&T talked me through the process and now mine is linked to T Mobile. You will need the IMEI number which is located on the phone under the battery, you will also need the serial number which again is under the battery.
