Your monitor and your TV are currently screen 1 and screen 2 with screen 2 as an extension of screen 1 (you can move your mouse all the way across and see it come over to the TV screen). With Vista or Windows 7, right click on the desktop (no icons or programs) and choose Screen Resolution. There you will find options to change your screen output. (The choices are fairly straight forward - both screens identical, screen 1 or screen 2.) For XP, the right click on the desktop will get you to the point but I think it was called Display Options.

Again what OS are you using? Then I may be of more help. (Just walked over to the laptop with the 2 display setup - Screen Resolution, Multiple monitors (Win7).) Once that was set up, there is actually a quick three simultaneous key strokes command to switch back and forth (
The Control Panel Display options is another place to set up the monitor arrangement. What graphics card driver are you using? I can't rule out that you need to adjust something in the graphics controls. (My ATI drivers (desktop) and my laptop's (intel drivers) are also accessible with that right click on the desktop.)
BTW, did you reboot after connecting the computer to the TV with the TV on? At least on my older computer (still running Win7) the plug-and-play drivers don't synch and let me swap monitors until I reboot a second time.
