My Dyson dc18 had the same symptoms. The wand worked well and the floor bar had no suction. After removing pieces & shoving my fingers into the machine (no blockage) I found the suction pipe rotates between two positions (floor and wand). It looks like a piece of plastic broke on the outside housing, so it no longer rotates positions when the wheels are raised or lowered. My son found we can move the suction by sliding a finger into the mechanism behind the wheel cover, and rotating the plastic piece clock-wise or counter clock-wise until it locks into position. It's a big pain but it works for now. I wish I could find a replacement piece online. Patty

I am ordering Micro switch Cam Assy and housing to try and repair this myself as there are no service centers remotely near me. My floor suction works the piece that makes the switch from Hose use to floor is busted. I fixed it once, but its finally broke. This may be what happened to yours as well. I have DC-18 model.

Want wont ****, or it wont turn off...here is what we did....
We used a bungee cord, hooked it up to the bottom red pedal and attached the other end of the bungee cord to the handle on the top of the vac filter so the that the red pedal would be forced to stay in the upright position so we could use the wand. the plastic piece came off and nobody at dyson seems to know how to fix it...
then, one day our wand suction would not turn off and no suction would come from the beater, well there is a little ball inside the vacuum behind the base of the hose, take off the hose, use your finger (it wont bite you) and rotate that white ball so that you can't see a hole. it should be solid, this will turn off the suction from the wand hose back toward the beater bar.
better than nothing.

No "guy at Dyson" it's the plastic piece inside that's broken. there's no clog. We need to be able to find out how to replace this part that is breaking causing no suction from the bottom, only from the wand. Part number.. is what we need and how to buy it.

I have the same problem. The plastic piece broke that switches the vacuum from floor cleaning to wand cleaning. I haven't found a way to fix it yet. If you find a way, please let me know.

Thanks,
Debbie

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

Its possible that there is a blockage in the base of the hose or the main duct which may prevent the suction switching from the hose to the base. We would recommend checking your machine for blockages by following the blockage procedure outlined in your user guide ot in the Support section on our website at www.dyson.com.

I hope that this information is useful to you.

Kind regards
Darran

My vacuum has been like this for over a year - the plastic part that moves the suction tube between floor suction

  • Pam Conway
    Pam Conway Aug 24, 2015

There's NO BLOCKAGE ! It's the small clear wheel where the gray lever hooks to it. The plastic piece has broken off! So when you try to switch from floor to wand the piece is broken off that turns the cylinder. The previous comment from lady_tech_e is right. In order to switch from floor to the wand you have to manually turn the clear wheel so the opening is at the floor suction or for the wand suction. This seems to be a common problem with this model Dyson. Now it's such a pain to use my Dyson! :-(

Ok i have the answer for all those who either has suction at the hose and not at the floor or the other way around and its not a blockage its a broken grey plastic piece that turns the clear plastic wheel which in turn turns and pushes in a white plastic cylinder to shut off or on the suction to one side of the ball or the other you can see this if you pull the lower hose connection off the clear wheel can be seen on the left side between the part that holds the back wheels and the rest of the vac it has a channel in it where a pin or something of that sort moved in and out in order to turn it you can by hand turn it counter clockwise to get suction to the hose or opposite to get the floor the part you would have to replace is Iron Under Carriage Assembly Part Number:DY-91237601

  • Greg

I agree with Sam Herrin, Pam Conway and lady_tech_e above. I saw a broken gray plastic arm that used to hold a white roller. That roller traveled into a slot in a clear plastic round piece that changed (rotates) a suction valve from floor to wand when the handle is placed upright. That gray plastic piece broke one day when the vacuum fell to the floor. The gray, thin plastic arm with roller is not very robust. The whole under carriage assembly can be purchased for under $70 (Jan 2019). See picture.
Thanks for all the help from fixya members.

FIXED - My vac wasn't blocked, as such! The inside of a Bic pen (the plastic bit with the ink in) was wedged in the suction pipe, preventing the vac switching from wand to floor. The wand worked fine, but the floor suction wouldn't engage.

I had the problem, the wand suctioned great but the vac for floors had little suction. The fix was to take the wand completely off the vacuum and I found something stuck there, now works great. Karen.

Cannot reconect hose at base dyson dc8

Hi Joei, it's Jack at Dyson.

DC18's hose should clip back onto the machine without difficulty. It just pushes into place, and you should hear and feel a click as it locks securely. You might find the tips in our Support guide useful: http://www.dyson.com/support/dc18/dc18-allfloors/diagnosis-root-menu/dc18tilterwashvid/flo-dc18-gen-wand-suction/flo-dc18-gen-wand-suction-main/flo-dc18-gen-remove-the-wand-from-hose/redirect-to-flo-dc18-gen-check-the-hose/flo-dc18-gen-check-the-hose

If you'd like further guidance on reattaching it, please give the Dyson customer Helpline a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA), or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Model DC40, the wand doesn't have any suction when I want to use on stairs, etc.

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.
If your DC40 doesn't seem to have suction through the wand but picks up as normal on flooring, it's likely there's a blockage in the wand or hose. To locate and remove any obstructions, please follow the steps shown in our online Support guide:

http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc40/dc40-multi-floor/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-up-well/check-the-wand-and-hosedc40

It's also worth giving both filters a wash as shown in the video below - in normal use this should be done at least once a month. Use cold water without detergent and at least 24 hours for the filters to dry completely before replacing them.

I hope this helps, but if you'd like any further assistance please call our freephone Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US).

Best wishes,

Jack

On my DC18 there is no suction at the wand.I took it apart to make sure there was no clog. What switches the suction from the bottom to the wand? Thanks John

  • I actually answered a question just like this the other day. On the DC18 the switch is automatic. When the vacuum is upright the suction is automatically to the hose.
  • When you tilt the handle back the suction is automatically to the floor.
  • If you took things apart and cleaned them and have no suction through the hose when the vacuum in the upright position then this is a manufacturers defect.
  • The way I know this is for the other persons issue I called Dyson directly because I wanted to see why I could not see a switch and they told me there was none, it was automatic.
  • Here is the good news. Dyson offers a full 5 year warranty and the DC18 has only been out for 4 years. So every DC18 on the market is still under a full warranty.
  • What Dyson told me is this. Contact Dyson and they will see if their is a repair center near you and if so then you can drop it off there for a 100% free warranty repair.
  • If there is no repair shop in your area then they will ship it both ways and repair it 100% free on Dyson.

  • Here is there contact information.
  • Here is the link to choose the country should you be outside the USA. http://www.dyson.com/ If you choose that link the when the page loads got to the lower right of the screen to the fine print and click on "contact us" and the information will show up.

My dyson dc18 has no suction from beneath, but the wand has lots of suction.

The head is blocked by something, it could be a bottle top, rolled up tissue, or something like that.

Take it off the end of the wand and look down the hole
'with a flashlight" where the wand goes into it..

You should be able to see it in there.

The object should be pushed out the way it went in..

Try using something made of plastic to push it out with...
