HD NOT RECONISED BY COMPUTER

First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.

Acer Aspire 5002WLMi Laptop won't recognize full 320 Gigabytes of new PATA hard drive. It's always been running a 80 Gigabyte 4200 RPM but that drive is old...a 2005 HD. New WD320 only reads 137...

The BIOS in the ACER determines the maximum size of the hard drive it can support.
Check the laptop's specification to see the max size you can install in this model laptop.
It appears that the max size your laptop can support is 140 Gb (unformatted). 137Gb formatted.

I suggest you install a hard drive up to 140 Gb capacity in your laptop and place the 320 Gb hard drive in an USB hard drive adapter case and when you attach this hard drive to the USB port in your ACER laptop then you will be able to get the full 320 Gb capacity after you delete the partition and create a 320 Gb partition and format the hard drive.

Over a year ago my acer 5315 laptop stopped working as im not sure why since then i have brought a new laptop, but on the acer it has some old docs and stuff

Ti retrieve the data from your old laptop, remove the hard drive and insert the hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter and then connect it into the USB port of your new laptop. Your new laptop will see this as an external mass storage device and you can then open the various folders and files on this hard drive to copy or view them.
If your new laptop cannot detect this hard drive, then the hard drive is faulty.
If you desparately need the data off this old hard drive then there are companies that can retrieve data off faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you and arm and a leg for their services.

Can i delete folders that come with an new Acer external hard disc, e.g. autorun, etc.

Yes you can delete all the files safely. They are there to set encryption and make the hard drive auto-run when you plug it in. If you delete them your computer will still recognize the hard drive.

When i start up my computer it say operating system not found so could u tell me wat i have to do

First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If this does not work then reboot and go to the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Next - to determine if the hard drive is faulty, remove the hard drive and insert it into an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port. If this computer cannot see it as an external hard drive and you cannot open the various folders and files, this confirms the hard drive is faulty.
The hard drive needs to be replaces in the laptop and Windows installed and the laptop's device drivers and your programs etc to get a functioning laptop again.

Had to have new hard drive in my Acer laptop due

Probably a specific drive needed from Acer. You can try thier support website if you do not have the drives CDs that came with your laptop. They will want your model number, then you should be able to get the driver.

Peace,

Doesn't boot

If the bios does not reconise the hard drive then you will need a disk utility at this point. some laptops only accept a max of 120gigs for a reason if your trying to put a larger drive in a old system you need the latest bios drivers for one and use a disk utility.
