Autofocus does not work ( when ON ) with any lenses .

  • krazydarcy Jul 17, 2008

My autofocus seems to sweep from far focus to near and back once and gives up trying to focus. My focus indicater when in manual focus ) works fine which tells meit's not a problem with the sensor. I suspect my problem might be the firmware (flashed from v1.0 to 1.02)

I remember reading a review of the K100D that mentioned that it had poor low light performance. I know mine has a really hard time focusing in low light situations. It does the sweeping back and forth & most of the time never ends up taking a picture. (Even when it bursts the flash to try to focus.)

I've just started experimenting by using a flash light aimed at the subject I want to focus in low light situations, and the camera seems to be able to focus & take a shot more reliably.

If this works, I'm going to rig up something to hold the flash light underneath the camera so that I can use it more often.

I will post an update if this works!

Take Care & Happy Imaging!

Is adding grip for nikon d5100 solve the problem of auto focus with sigma 170-500 lens

No. This lens lacks an autofocus motor, relying on the camera to have one. The D5100 lacks an autofocus motor, relying on the lens to have one. Adding a battery grip does not change this situation.

The D5100 only autofocuses with lenses having an internal autofocus motor. Nikon designates such lenses AF-S, Sigma calls it HSM. Lenses without the motor will only autofocus with the larger and heavier Nikon cameras such as the D7000.

I have a Nikon D40x and purchased the AF nikkor 50 mm f/1.8D lens a couple years ago, but find that it can only be focused manually. Is there any way to "turn on" the autofocus? I have not had...

Sorry, but the D40x lacks an autofocus motor, depending on the lens to have one. Nikon calls such lenses AF-S. This particular lens does not have such a motor, relying on the camera to have one. The only 50mm lens currently available with an autofocus motor is this one:
http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Camera-Lenses/2180/AF-S-NIKKOR-50mm-f%252F1.4G.html

Earlier this week the Nikon web site listed a new 50mm F1.8 lens with an autofocus motor, but then it was removed. Hopefully they will officially announce this lens soon.

Will a Nikon Sigma 70-210 work on my nikon D60??

Assuming the lens has a Nikon mount, then it will fit and work on the D60. Sigma makes lenses for a variety of cameras; a lens with a Canon mount, for example, will not fit onto a Nikon camera. However, the 70-210 is a rather old lens. Unless it specifies "HSM" it will not autofocus on the D60. The D60 does not have an autofocus motor, relying on the lens to have one. Nikon calls such lenses "AF-S" while Sigma designates theirs "HSM".

LOOKING FOR A Nikon Normal AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens WITH VR.

There is no such thing. You can see a full list of current Nikon lenses at

You can see a list of current and old Nikon autofocus lenses at

You'll see that no 50mm Nikon lens has ever had VR.

I'm looking to buy a digatil camera a D3000 and

See my answer to your other post.

One more addition for the D3000. Older autofocus lenses without a built-in motor will not autofocus on the D3000. Only AF-S and AF-I lenses will autofocus on the D3000.

I have a Nikon D60 and my autofocus has stopped working. It is not because of the lense because i have tried other lenses and the auto focus won't work with them either so it must be an issue with the...

You should check custom menu setting 2, and make sure it's set to one of the auto modes. Make sure the lenses you are using are AF-S and not regular AF lenses. The D60 has no autofocus motor, so autofocus only works with AF-S lenses.

I always suggest folks take a look at Ken Rockwell's website also, here's a link to a specific page on autofocus on the D60.

Post a comment here if none of this works and I'll see what else we can do.

Nikon 18-55 zoom lens doesn't autofocus

You might like to check if the A/M slider switch on the lens by the Nikon label is set to A.
It sometimes gets moved accidently.
Set to M the lens will not autofocus.

Try you 18-200 lens on another Nikon DSLR. If it still does not Autofocus. It is the lens. Sometimes the electrical contact points of the lens are not making correct contact with the camera. ok?

Autoocus doesn't work

The first thing to check is that autofocus is enabled on the camera body.

The auto/manual focus selector switch is located on the front of the camera, just below the lens release button (on the left side as you look through the view finder). Make sure that the white dot on the selector lines up with the white dot under the AF (autofocus).

If this does not solve the problem, make sure that your lenses are set to autofocus mode as well.
