The yellow question mark means there is an issue with the audio controller or the drivers to make it work. Try uninstalling the drivers through the add/remove software applet inside control panel. Then remove the audio controller from hardware manager, reboot the machine and then re-install the drivers for the audio system. You can download the drivers from the mainboard manufacturers web site, just make sure you download the correct drivers for your operating system and audio chip. If you still get the yellow question mark in hardware manager, you may be trying to use the wrong drivers or you my even have an issue with the audio chip itself, as in it's damaged and will not work. However, most audio issues are due to drivers so try re-installing those first.

Windows media player throws error when I play any audio

As you may have already notice, there isn't a problem with your driver.
However to gain a better understand the problem you rule out a couple of things. However, if the this problem is only present in windows media player. Then you should try another play i.e. VLC media player.

1. Go to you device manager and make sure the device is working properly. If not try uninstalling the device, restarted the computer letting windows discover the device again.

2. Next go to windows media player file (press "alt" key to get toolbar in newer version. Select options -> devices select your speaker -> properties and be sure that your audio device is available and selected.

3. Finally if all these options has failed, please use an alternative media like the one mention above (VLC media player).

I hope this have been a great help in your troubles. Please provide feedback on the solution.

I try to play an audio CD on my windows media player and a message comes up that won't allow me to play it. It says that my audio device may not be functioning properly or that there may be no audio device...

1. this may be a connector problem to the dvd player or the dvd player is defective.
2. You may also have lost the driver set to the device.
3. Your drivers in the " device manager" to see if they can be updated or re-installed.

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not...

Most likely you need to install drivers for your sound card. To confirm this, please check your device Manager (right-click My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager) for unknown/improperly installed devices.

Please visit you computer manufacturer’s website, and download drivers along with the installation instructions.

Sound device problem

if you go to the start menu and right click my computer on the list at the bottom it says properties click thAt a window will open called system properties on the tab titled hardware at the top click that a window for the hardware will open and you are looking for device manager in the device manager you can update and mess with whatever you have installed on your computer. now look for sound video and game controllers on the left is a plus arrow click the + symbol and it will expand your devices look for anything titled with the words (audio driver) this should give you make and model information of your sound card and drivers from here you can use windows (by double clicking your selection) to troubleshoot and update that driver or what i would reccomend is write that information down and then google search the description for your sound card and driver i think a generic driver is called legacy audio driver or something like that. anyways hope this fix ya
