You probably have the solid state hard drive (4gb)... its not big enough to hold all the updates .. unfortunately the operating system comes with "auto update" turned on ... it will download updates until the drive is full then will crash .. one way to resolve this is to kill the internet so it cant log on ... you can disconnect or turn off your wifi or if you are fast enough you can use Fn F2 (turns off wifi) .. just watch the wifi light to make sure its off at boot .. there is a lag in response so its a bit tricky ...now once booted you can turn off "auto update" ...then you can turn your wifi or internet back on .. manually update only things you know you have room for .. if your 701 has a CF card slot (like my eeepc 900a . then that can be used as additional hard drive space ... during installation i made that the boot drive (advanced) (of course you cant remove it after that).. the new eeebuntu4 beta is a wonderful upgrade for the system .. but i could only get it working by using thhe CF drive as above.. if you havent already done so you can make a bootable USB jump drive .. you can run Ubuntu off that as well as install from that ...change the boot order in cmos ..to boot first from the Jump dirve ...
you can run the computer entirely off the external jump drive .. you have to load a "live" version of your operating system on that jump drive ... no matter what is wrong with the internal drive that should work .. but you have to be able to get into cmos to select what to boot on ... .. and that i think is done by holding down maybe F2 at boot . i think F9 allows you to recover your original system ... you should be able to at least turn on the machine unless the power supply is bad .. does the red charrging light come on?? ...
on mine (901a) there is a blue light on the power supply .. it is lit all the time even if its not plugged into the computer ... if that light is not lit then make sure you have power at the outlet ... make sure the cord hasnt come loose that goes to the AC line (plugs into the power supply)... i doubt that loading the program and updates could do any perminant damage to the computer ... the power supply on mine is 12 volt 3 amp with the center plus ... its normally just a little warm ..

thanks for your reply, but I guess it's too late to try your tweaks and the crash occurred.
I expect the updates were too much for the SS hard drive, but now I can't even switch the eeepc on.
No lights come on at all, that's the problem. the eepc was fully charged when i was doing the updates but running off the mains. Now it won't start at all, no sign of life. I tried removing battery and holding down the on button for while (which seems to work for some folks) but I have nothing. I fear the worst.
