Image appears for 2-3 seconds then screen goes black

IBM ThinkVision L170m monitor - was fine for 3 years, but now when PC switched on the monitor displays the PC's image for about 2-3 seconds then the screen goes black. On/Off switch on monitor has no effect. Disconnect and reconnect of PC cable will give same result - 2-3 seconds of image, then blackness. So - the power's OK, the PC signal is getting through, but the monitor won't "hold" the image for more than 3 seconds.

Same problem. 2-3 seconds (or less) of monitor turning on and then goes black. Seems a waste to throw away, but can't find a "swollen capacitor." What should I be looking for?

The following steps are how to examine what's wrong with your LCD monitors. After you turned it on and the screen went black, you have to check that if you can see the image on the screen or not by shining a flashlight into the screen, not directly but find the best angle to the screen and take a look very closely. If you can see the icons or any image, there will be a minor problem. This is because of the lamps inside screen. Some of them were broken and it is very easy to replace. If you cannot see anything on the screen, there'll be some problems with inverter board. If you have soldering tool and want to fix it by yourself, check the caps first. It may cause this problem. Some caps might show leaking or burn spot on the board because of too high temp. If you don't have soldering tool, you better go get a technician to do so. Hope this help!! If anything I can help you with, feel free to let me know.
Thank you,
Tan

Have had 2 of these screens do this - both times it was swollen caps of control board. Take it apart and check if any caps are bulged. If so replace. Best to replace the whole set as this was part of the world wide caps problem.

It doesn't show the image from computer, the screen still black but the power light appears on.

Connect another monitor to the PC and confirm that the PC is working , specially the display drivers/card. If so the fault is only with the monitor and it can be related to power supply issue, a backlight inverter circuit shorting or a fault in the main board., all of this mightt require a good probe with the use of manual. So please check this out and confirm if the fault is with the monitor or the PC.

IBM ThinkVision L191p after power on, remain black.

First place to chaeck will be power supply, the problem can also be caused by bad inverter circuits, bad lamps, see example of failed monitors due to bad caps, lamps, http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

IBM ThinkVision 17" Monitor displays for 1 second then black

This seems to be a common problem with these monitors. Have a look very closely and see if you can still see something there. From there, either send it to get repaired, or, if you are handy with a soldering iron, open it up and replace the 4 main capacitors (at least one of them will be "popped", but it is handy to replace them all.

In order to open the monitor, you will need to remove the stand, and make sure you get all of the screws out before attacking it with a screwdriver.
I have 5 IBM monitors at work with the same problem, and opening them up has shown the popped capacitors.
Again, only recommended if you know what you are doing. Screwing it up will leave you with nothing.

LCD (IBM) monitor power light is green but no display

Make sure the monitor lead which goes behind the computer is in correctly and has not come loose.

Unscrew it from the PC and put it back in again.
