Press and hold the bottom bar of the square ridged around the central button. This is the bar you press to play/pause and start up the player. It should have a power button symbol on it.
From my experience this is a hardware fault with the touchpad. Luckily you can buy a faulty player on ebay and replace the touchpad - make sure the fault on the faulty one is not the same!
The player is is easy to take apart and the touchpad easy to replace.
Go into my computer then right click on the removable storage icon and then on format.
Hope this helps, I have had mine for nearly 2 years and it has only allowed me to play one album for the last 18 months, the worst £130 I have ever spent.
Try reseting the player. It might not work all the time, but this was the first time my down scroll ever locked up on me, and the reset button fixed the problem. It might just be a temporary solution, but at least it's something.
