You can use a more sophisticated partitioning and formating software program such as GParted or Acronis Disk Editor. Both programs can create a bootable cdrom that will boot and allow you to delete create and format partitions.

gparted: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

acronis: http://www.acronis.com/

good luck!

I have a seagate momentus st94q19a 40 gb hard drive from an old netbook. When I try to install Windows XP, it tells me it can't access the hard drive. Is there any way to fix this or is this hard drive...

see if the BIOS setting for the hard drive is se to IDE. Then, see if there are any jumpers on the hard drive. There should be a diagram on the drive itself that you can follow to place the jumper as Master, or just remove the jumper.
Also, you may want to test the hard drive for surface problems before you make it a system drive. Usually system hard drives go through thousands of read/write cycles that wears them down quite fast, so if the hard drive works just fine as an external USB drive that doesnt mean it will do good as system drive.

Mixing ide with sata

Maxtor now owned by Seagate are having a number of issues with current tech, most of the time you can down load a flash for the firm ware, but there are those times that it will not work. If you had information on the drive you will not be able to retreive it unless you go through i365 a seagate company. depending on how much info you have on the drive they will charge anywhere from 400.00 - 1300.00. To this day they simply just do not provide the programme required to access the drive, I know I am going through it now..

Hardrive Partition Is corrupt

As i review your explaination, there might be a problem in your hard drive. There so many problems i encountered in the hard drive i encountered like that. However, some problems can be fix using your solution and the other can be fix by replacing the BIOS Battery, and sometime the error in the hardrive is cause by a memory fault. If you are sure that the memory, motherboard, and the bios battery is good and working properly. I recommend you to replace your hard drive that the inconsistency problem will be fined.

Please do testing of your hard drive by connecting it to the other system.
